In this article, we explain how to grow and care for a wide selection of common and unusual herbs, including ginger and lemon balm.Some herbs will grow anywhere, others may need extra care.I have been telling you a little about the different types of plants that I grow in my greenhouse and with all the varieties of flowers, greenery and vegetables I thought I should mention a little more about herbs.While I keep most of my herbs in the kitchen growing, so I can use them as they mature, I do have others in my greenhouse as well.
If you are interested in starting herbs from seeds you can mix your own soil that your herbs will thrive and grow in.It is important to keep your soil virtually acid free as herbs like more alkaline nutrients and fertilizers.
A good mix for growing herbs will include a good decomposing compost, decomposed manure and larger sands.Lime can be used in place of manure if you don't have access to any manure for your soils.
Herbs for Cooking
Many of the herbs that you use in your everyday cooking such as, oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme all are very easy to grow in your hobby greenhouse, or in your kitchen.These are herbs that will require little care with normal watering and sun patterns they will grow easily for your use.
A few shade loving herbs include chamomile, ginger, lemon balm, periwinkle, mint, parsley, tarragon, and thyme.
If you have an area in the greenhouse that is shaded by the shelving you can easily grow these types of herbs.Sometimes your particular open spaces in the kitchen will not allow for sun, so these types of herbs would work out great in these spots.You can grow herbs in large pots, mixing the types you are growing together, you can grow herbs in hanging baskets or in containers that you can place in the kitchen, on the deck or in the greenhouse.Decorating with herbs is easy as each plant is very different from another.When you really get some of your herbs taking off, you can plant a few of your most favorite in a container, add a bow and give as a gift for a good friend that likes to cook!
