It is a small deciduous tree that displays an abundance of purple blossoms in spring. It has large heart shaped leaves during summer, and long seedpods in fall. It has low water requirements and displays a high tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Does well in many soil types, except permanently wet soils. seed pods attract wildlife.

It is frequently planted as a street tree in residential areas. It is a small, deciduous, understory tree with a spreading, flat-to-rounded crown. Heart-shaped leaves open bright reddish-purple and gradually mature to a more muted purple. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.

Oklahoma Redbud tree, Cercis reniformis, 'Oklahoma', has glossy green foliage. This redbud tree was discovered growing wild in Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma in 1964. This tree has clusters of tiny, wine-red, pea-like flowers that bloom profusely on branches and mature trunks for 2-3 weeks in early spring (March-April) before foliage emerges. Part shade is best in hot climates. Excellent small tree for lawns, woodland gardens or naturalized areas.
