Penstemons are another member of the Scrophulariaceae which in itself is enough reason to grow them as far as I'm concerned. "You must come and see my Scrofulas", "Aren't the Scrofulas splendid this year" etc. They are valuable medium to tall border plants for a bright sunny position. Mulch in the fall in cold frosty areas and deadhead regularly to maintain a flowering show unless you want to collect the seed. Propagation can also be by spring division or softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in spring and summer. |
