Lobularia maritima

The Alyssum Sweet Oriental Nights, 'Lobularia maritima', displays tiny, rich, solid, deep purple flowers that make this low ground cover a delight. It is a wonderful annual ground cover. The Alyssum blooms all growing season. Nothing adds more to summer days than the frangrance of sweet Alyssum. The flowers are very small at 1/4 inch deep purple blooms that appear in clusters. They will continue to bloom until fall frost. In climate zones 9 and 10, they can bloom all year. Alyssum begin to bloom just 6 weeks after plantingSweet Oriental Nights prefers full sun or light shade and rich, well drained soils. Alyssum is not too picky and can withstand poor soils also. The Alyssum Sweet Tiny Tim, 'Lobularia maritima procumbens', is superior to Carpet of Snow alyssum. The dense, compact dwarf plant never needs to be sheared. It is a wonderful annual ground cover. Alyssum blooms all growing season and can withstand drought and heat. Nothing adds more to summer days than the gentle fragrance of Sweet Alyssum. Gourd - Luffa
Luffa aegyptiaca

The Gourd Luffa Chinese Okra, Cee Gwa, Sze Qwa, 'Luffa aegyptiaca' is simple and easy to grow. Grow your own sponge! The Luffa Gourd can also be cooked and eaten like summer squash! What a useful vegetable, and fun for the whole family. Grow your own sponge for exfoliating and clearing your skin, scrubbing dishes, and cleaning the barbeque grill. When the gourds are harvested between 4 and 6 inches long, they are a sweet, tasty vegetable that can be stir-fried, sauteed, or cooked with meats just as you would zucchini squash or okra. Mature gourd seeds can be roasted, and young flowers and foliage can be cooked as a green.Plant in the spring,1 to 2 weeks after the last average frost date and when soil temperatures have risen above 60 degrees. Place the gourds in full sun. The soil must be well drained and have lots of organic material. When using the gourds for a sponge, harvest when they turn brown, feel light and rattle with loose seeds.

Money Plant
Lunaria biennis

The Money Plant Honesty, 'Lunaria biennis', is an old fashioned garden favorite. The Money Plants seed pods are silvery, translucent "coins" perfect for dried bouquets. This Heirloom has been popular in winter arrangements since colonial times. The Money Plant is also called honesty, silver dollar, satinflower, penny flower, Judas' penny, and moonwart. The 1/2 inch flowers have four petals. The flowers resemble wild mustard but are purple or white instead of yellow. The flowers appear on branched clusters in the spring of the second year. Money can bloom in the first year if sown in January or February in mild climates.Money Plants prefer full sun to light shade and they do better with afternoon shade in hot summer climates. They perform well in average to poor soils. Plant the Money Plant in the spring after the last average frost date for bloom the following spring. This plant is often used for cut and dried flowers.

Lupine - Russell Mix
Lupinus 'Russell Hybrids'

The Lupine Russell Blend, 'Lupinus 'Russell Hybrids', has tall flower spikes with a large range of colors that makes Lupine when planted in groups a dramatic sight. The scents of the blossoms is like honey and it is a North America native flower. It is grown as an annual in southern states. The flowers are multiple 1/2 inch wide blossoms on spikes. They come in colors of white, yellow, pink, orange, red, salmon, lavender, blue, purple, and bicolors. Lupines bloom for 2 to 4 weeks in late spring.The Russel Blend prefers full sun and relatively cool conditions so do not plant in a hot spot. They prefer well drained and slightly acidic soil. Plant in the spring after average last frost date or in late summer in warmer climates. The Russell Blend is used for cut flowers, planted in mass, or backyard plants.

Texas Bluebonnet
Lupinus texensis

The Texas Bluebonnet, 'Lupinus texensis', is the state wildflower of Texas and it displays impressive spikes of blue flowers in the spring. Texas Bluebonnets are a great annual for naturalized wildflower areas. It also can be seen along roadsides and in fields in the southern USA. The Texas Bluebonnet has multiple 1/2 inch blue flowers on spokes and a white terminal tip. The blooms last for about 4 weeks in the spring.The Texas Bluebonnet can be planted anywhere, but it does best in climates where it can be planted in the fall and overwinter to produce spring flowers and planted in well drained soils that are sandy or loamy. In cold climates plant in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Texas Bluebonnets are used for cut flowers and for planting in mass in wildflower areas.
