Balsam Fir

The Balsam Fir, 'Abies balsamea', exhibits a relatively dense, dark-green, pyramidal crown with a slender spire-like tip. The scientific name "balsamea" is an ancient word for the balsam tree, so named because of the many resinous blisters found in the bark. Balsam fir and Fraser fir have many similar characteristics.The species thrives in cooler climates and demands abundant soil moisture and a humid atmosphere. A large percentage of Christmas trees are Balsam Firs.

The Concolor Fir tree, Abies concolor, is also known as white fir, concolor fir, silver fir, Rocky Mountain white fir, Colorado Fir, Lows Fir, Pacific white fir. Concolor Fir trees are large, densely-growing, narrow trees with a dome-shaped crown growing to 50 feet or more. This evergreen conifer tree is native to the mountainous regions of the western United States. This rapid growing fir tree is the most drought-resistant of all native firs. Although it can exist on poor, dry sites, the white fir grows most vigorously in moist, well-drained, acid soils in protected locations. It is a rapid grower after it becomes established. It makes a handsome ornamental and decorative Christmas tree.

Trident Maple

The Trident Maple tree, Acer Buergerianum, is a deciduous, 20-30 foot-high by 25-foot-wide tree in the wild. The Trident Maple has beautiful 3-inch-wide, tri-lobed leaves, glossy green above and paler underneath, which turn various shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn. Its flowers are bright yellow and showy in the spring. Trident Maple trees naturally exhibit low spreading growth and multiple stems but can be trained to a single trunk and pruned to make it branch higher, allowing passage below its broad, oval to rounded canopy. With its moderate growth rate, attractive orange-brown peeling bark, and easy maintenance, the Trident Maple is popular as a patio or street tree. The Trident Maple is a very popular species for bonsai, due to its small, three-lobed leaves, a readily-thickening trunk, and thick, gnarly roots which adapt well to root-over-rock style. It has enormous use for the home, commercial, or municipal property. Makes a nice small tree that can tolerate urban conditions, ie; confined root space, pollution, and heat and drought. Flame Amur Maple

The Flame Amur Maple tree, Acer ginnala, is usually a multi-stemmed tree or shrub, noted for its fiery-red autumn color. Its summer color is green, but is mixed with bright red samaras or 'helicopters' in mid summer. Flame Amur Maple trees are extremely hardy and drought resistant once established. They make an excellent screen or hedge. These deciduous trees are best grown in normal garden soil in full sun to partial shade. They are used widely in landscapes as hedge, partitions, or short tree-shrubs. They leaf out early and cast dense shade. It is a vigorous grower that is very tolerant of temperature extremes. The Crimson King Maple, 'Acer platanoides' 'Crimson King', is a red-leaved cultivar of the Norway Maple and it is noted for its rich maroon leaves throughout the summer. The Crimson King grows best in a well drained area and is very tolerant of drought and urban pollutants. It often used as a specimen tree for the landscape and it provides dense shade.The smooth bark, straight trunk, and strong branching, provide for nice winter interest. This tree is easily transplanted and is adapted to a wide variety of soils including alkaline, sand, clay and acid soils. Uses include bonsai, medium sized parking lot islands, median strip plantings, and residential shade and street tree.

Red Maple

The Red Maple tree, Acer rubrum, is a deciduous tree which will typically grow 40-60' tall with a rounded to oval crown. In northern states, red maple usually occurs in wet bottomland, river flood plains, and wet woods, but in the south, it typically frequents drier, rocky upland areas. Leaves are shiny green above and pale green beneath, 3-5 lobed and 3-6" across. Species name of rubrum is everywhere in evidence: red flowers in dense clusters in late March to early April red fruit reddish stems and twigs, red buds, and, in the fall, orange-red foliage color. This maple tree grows faster than Norway and Sugar maples, but slower than silver maple. Sap of this tree can be used to make a maple syrup that is inferior in quality to syrups made from the sugar maple. Red Maple trees are widely planted and admired.

A medium-sized shade tree, it is perfect for the urban garden. Its bright, enduring fall color begins red and gradually turns brilliant purple red over a long period. This maple was developed by the National Arboretum and grows 25 feet tall and 12 feet wide which gives it an oval shape. It exhibits significant tolerance to leafhopper, one of the major pests of landscape red maples.

The Northwood Maple, Acer rubrum 'Northwood', is an excellent shade tree with ascending branches and a round, oval form. The dark green summer foliage turns orange to red in the fall. This maples is easily grown in well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils, but requires moist, slightly acid conditions for optimum growth and color. It is very cold hardy. Reaching an height of 50 feet and a width of 35 feet, it is an excellent specimen tree for the lawn, street or park. It is important to know that this tree has a shallow, flattened root system that may buckle nearby sidewalks or driveways if planted too close.

It is one of the best trees for poor soil and it transplants very easily. The wood of this maple tree is soft and can be damaged by severe winds or ice storms. Along with its fast growth, it may live 130 years or more. The Silver Maple is often used in residential areas for shade because of its thick foliage and fast growth. Its leaves are deeply cut and silvery white underneath. They appear as light green and turn to yellow in the fall. This deciduous maple tree provides very dense shade. Fall color is a golden yellow.

The Green Mountain carries all of the characteristics of the Sugar Maple with the strong limbs and the gorgeous fall color and the seeds are inconspicuous and causes no significant litter problems. Fall color is usually yellow to reddish brown. A good tree for planters or patios. It has excellent small tree form and good foliage quality.

It is an excellent tree for small lawns and street tree use.It does well in full sun and in general seems to be quite adaptable. It of northern China but has a very large native range. It tolerates heat and alkaline soils.

Ohio Buckeye

The Ohio Buckeye tree, Aesculus glabra, derives the name from its large brown seeds, which resemble the eyes of the white-tailed deer. In the spring it produces greenish yellow flowers with protruding stamens, followed by prickly fruits. It is a handsome tree with attractive foliage. The Ohio Buckeye prefers shady conditions in its youth, but grows in full sun to full shade from youth through maturity. The Ohio buckeye is also known as American buckeye, fetid buckeye, and stinking buck-eye. It derives its unflattering common names from the disagreeable odor that emanates when the leaves are crushed.The leaves are dark green above and paler below. This deciduous tree is a good shade tree.

The Horsechestnut Buckeye tree, Aesculus hippocastanum, is a beautiful, round-headed tree perfectly suited for use in smaller yards. This flowering tree has long, dense clusters of single, white flowers and are very attractive and favored by hummingbirds. Horsechestnut Buckeye trees are deciduous. This tree is widely planted in parks, avenues and in large gardens. This tree blooms in early summer with individual flowers that have crumpled white petals which ages to dull red. Fruits have a leathery case covered with short prickles and in autumn release large seeds. The dark green foliage turns yellow-brown in fall. The nuts produced by this species are inedible. Wildlife such as squirrels gather many, and plant those that they don't eat. These trees prosper in full sun and also attracts butterflies.

The Yellow Buckeye tree, Aesculus octandra, is an ornamental tree and may also be known as the big buckeye, buckeye, large buckeye, Ohio buckeye, and sweet buckeye. The smallish creamy yellow or occasionally pinkish flowers appear in 6" panicles from late spring to early summer, followed by fruits each with 2 to 4 seeds. The dark green leaves turn yellow before falling. The bark is dark brown, becoming furrowed with age. Yellow Buckeye trees have nuts that are attractive to squirrels.

Dwarf Red Buckeye

The Dwarf Red Buckeye tree, Aesculus pavia, is one of the first plants in the woodland to reawaken in spring. The Red Buckeye trees starts sending out tender new leaves as early as February, up to a month before the surrounding oaks and maples show any sign of renewed life. Red buckeyes lavish carmine flowers come early, too, and are an important source of food for hummingbirds in the months before most other plants are in flower. This deciduous tree is a wonderful little tree to plant at the edge of a woodland garden, near a patio, or as the focal point at the curve of a path. It is especially pretty when underplanted with early spring wildflowers. Its large, drooping, dark green leaves provide plenty of interest throughout the growing season. The lush foliage also provides excellent cover for songbirds. Red buckeye should be recommended to all impatient gardeners, because it brings instant gratification: It starts blooming when it is just 3 feet tall. It is known for its deep crimson flowers borne in early summer. It is easy to grow.

The Mimosa tree, Albizzia julibrissin, sometimes called Silk tree, was introduced to the United States in 1745 for use as an ornamental plant because of its unusual, attractive and fragrant pom-pom like flowers and interesting fern-like foliage.This deciduous tree is attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds. In gardens this tree grows to 2030'. Mimosa trees are fast-growing but rather short-lived. It has a single trunk with smooth gray bark. Each bipinnate leaf is made up of hundreds of tiny leaflets coated in white hairs, giving the foliage a silvery cast. In late winter or spring the domed crown is decked in sprays of small, globular, golden yellow flower heads. It is able to survive winter in southern U.S., but flowers better in climates with a longer, drier summer.

Holly, American, Ilex opaca, is also called white holly or Christmas holly. The tree has been one of the most valuable and popular trees in the Eastern United States for its foliage and berries, Christmas decorations, and for ornamental plantings. It stays green year round. Like the southern pines, American holly is primarily a plant of the humid Southeast. American Holly is the only native North American holly that attains tree size, and although slow growing, it is well worth the wait. Growth is best on moist, slightly acid, well-drained sites such as upland pine sites and hammocks. The tree needs to be protected from drying winter sun and winds. Cross pollinate to get red, berry-like fruit.

The American Linden, Tilia americana, is a rapid growing tree with fragrant yellow flowers and large, dense foliage that provides excellent shade. Although it will grow in dry heavier soils, it prefers deep moist soils. Its shape is pyramidal in youth, but rounded at maturity. A medium to large tree native east of the Missouri River in North Dakota. American Linden is desirable as a landscape tree for its large stature, shade and aromatic flowers. Fruit with attached pale-green bract, gives tree a two-tone appearance in late summer. Use as a shade, boulevard, or park tree. It needs open landscape areas due to its large size and spreading root system.

American Mountain-ash

The Mountainash, American, Sorbus americana, is a smooth-barked tree that can reach a height of 30 feet with a trunk 18 inches in diameter. The crown is narrow, open and round-topped. Its dark green leaves resemble those of the sumac and turn orange and purple in the fall. This tree provides spring and summer interest, with white flower clusters in the spring, and then these blooms yield brightly colored clusters of red berries in the summertime. Mountainash prefers acidic soil with good drainage and full sun to light shade.

The American Sentry Linden, Tilia americana 'McKSentry', is a McKay Nursery introduction that was selected for its uniform branching habit and upright narrow form. With an attractive crown, its leaves turn to a beautiful orange, red and gold in fall and its seed and leaf create the illusion of a two toned color. This is an excellent nursery tree and makes up well as a young B&B tree. Use it in the landscape for boulevards and smaller yards where space is at a premium, but shade is required. The distinctive bark is silvery gray especially when the plant is immature and is very attractive. American Sentry is the most resistant Linden to Japanese beetle.

The Amur Chokecherry, Prunus maackii, is a small tree that produces white flowers and black fruit, usually eaten by birds before fully ripe. The outstanding exfoliating bark is golden brown to dark red with a glistening metallic color, which gives an excellent winter effect and landscape interest. Clumps will have two or more stems. It does best in moist, well-drained soil high in organic matter, but it is also moderately salt tolerant. This tree has a moderate growth rate and can be grown as a single or multi-trunked tree. Amur has a pyramidal shape when young that becomes rounded with age. Pruning out the lower branches allows the attractive bark to be more visible when in leaf. Use as a specimen tree in areas where it can be appreciated for the bark and silhouette in winter. It is ideal for the small yard because of its smaller size. Its name comes from the Amur River that flows for 1,000 miles as the natural boundary between China and Russia.

Amur Maackia, 'Maackia amurensis, is a small, deciduous tree with a broad, rounded habit. It typically grows at a slow-to-moderate rate to a height of 20-30'. Amur Maackia features erect, narrow, spike-like clusters of fragrant, dull white, pea-like flowers which appear in late spring. Flowers are followed by flat seed pods . The multi-divided leaflets are grey/green when young but mature to dark green, and often drop in fall without significantly changing color. Best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, but prefers full sun. It can adapt to a wide range of soil conditions. Use as a small shade tree or as a street tree where the peeling, orange/brown, shiny bark is especially noticeable.

The Cypress, Arizona, Cupressus arizonica var arizonica, is a steeple shaped tree with a pale-green to gray-green color and the only cypress native to the Southwest. It is a medium sized tree 50 to 60 feet tall, and an evergreen, with a dense, upright, conical crown and smooth reddish-brown bark, that sometimes becomes fibrous with flat ridges. Arizona cypress generally requires little maintenance. Deep watering at least every other week is necessary for desert planting during the growing season. Arizona cypress is especially susceptible to fire and needs proper protection. Use Arizona Cypress for erosion control, windbreaks, or as a valued Christmas tree.

The Autumn Blaze Ash, Fraxinus americana 'Autumn Blaze', is a COPF introduction by Morden Research Station in Manitoba, Canada. This is the first white ash adapted for the prairie region of Canada and the Dakotas. It has a nice purple fall color, a light seed crop, and good oval form. The original tree is in Roseau, MN. This ash is rarely or never fed on by Japanese beetles. Autumn Blaze is a tall, deciduous tree. As a young tree, it tends to be upright oval in habit, later it develops an open and rounded crown. It is a medium fast growing tree that has ash-gray bark with diamond shaped furrows. The foliage is dark green above, paler on leaf underside. The fruit is not especially ornamental. Autumn Blaze thrives in full sun, on moist well drained soil and needs to be pruned in the fall. When healthy and vigorous, this makes a beautiful specimen tree.

The most cold hardy of the Calleryana cultivars, it has white flowers in spring, dark glossy foliage, and brilliant red fall color. Autumn Blaze's spectacular crimson fall color defoliates by mid-October, allowing Autumn transplanting. It prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun, but is adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, dry soils, and heat. Its round pome fruit is not ornamentally significant and is covered in russet dots that are olive-brown to tan color. This three season tree is used for a great specimen street tree, excellent for small residential landscapes, a screen, or for mass groupings.

The "Autumn Purple" White Ash, Fraxinus americana, 'Autumn Purple', is a seedless male tree and is a cultivar of the species which is native to moist areas. This fast growing White Ash tree grows 2/3 feet per year. It is almost pyramidal with a round top when young, but gradually slows down and develops an oval shape. Autumn Purple Ash trees prefer a sunny location. This deciduous tree develops a consistantly outstanding deep red, maroon or purple fall color. There are few if any trees with longer lasting fall colors. The Autumn Puple Ash tree makes a great tall shade tree.

Lilac - Avalanche, 'Syringa vulgaris 'Avalanche', is showy and freely produces panicles of large, single white fragrant florets on a rounded to upright plant of 9 feet. It blooms in late spring to early summer, and rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles. The cut flowers hold up very well, and easily fill a house with their fragrance. Requires full sun and needs regular watering; do not overwater. Avalanche is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. It can be used in many situations, including shrub borders, informal hedges and perennial borders. Lilacs can withstand severely cold winters and in fact, the species does not grow well in areas without significant frost in wintertime.
