The Newport Plum, Prunus cerasifera 'Newport, is a superior small ornamental tree that has beautiful reddish-purple foliage with bright red tips all summer long. One of the first trees to bloom in spring, it has fragrant pink flowers that are followed by purple fruit. Newport was introduced in 1923 by the University of Minnesota and is probably the most hardy of the purple-leaf cherry plum trees. This is a rounded, deciduous tree that is highly decorative with its beautiful foliage. Excellent in Japanese gardens, or just about anywhere you would like an extravagant, showy specimen tree. It prefers sandy or clay soils, and its water needs range from normal to moist. Newport is low maintenance and tolerates deer and rabbits.

The Northern Lights Apple, Malus 'Northern Lights', is a new apple variety that ripens in early mid-season . It is a large red fruit, 3 inches in diameter, and 60 to 100 per cent of its skin is a glossy, attractive bright red. Its flavor is slightly tart, and fruity-flavored. In addition to bearing very good fruit, the tree is especially resistant to severely cold winter temperatures. It has a mild flavor, and great for eating and cooking. Plant about a month after the first killing frost in the fall or about a month before the last killing frost in the spring. Select a planting site that has good air, drainage, full sunlight and deep, well drained soil.

Very tender, finely grained, crisp, juicy, tart and late maturing. Northern Spy Apple is large, round, often flattened; the skin is greenish yellow with striped pinkish red with a delicate bloom, and occasional russet patches. This apple is rather firm, aromatic and has a subacid flavor. It is an excellent all purpose apple, but is not good for drying or making apple cider.Northern Spy is remarkably fresh after a long storage period. The tree is very large, upright, a vigorous grower, and productive. It tends to bear biennially. It blooms late in the season and takes about 12 years to bear fruit. Ripens in late October. Needs a pollinator such as Golden Delicious.
