Echtermeyer Crabapple

The Echtermeyer Weeping Crabapple, 'Malus Echtermeyer', is an attractive, small, weeping ornamental tree. The weeping side limbs produce large purplish-red flowers. New foliage has a purplish tinge and turns to bronze-green as the leaves mature. The Echtermeyer produces 1” purplish-red fruit. The trunk requires staking for the first few years. The weeping form can be easily maintained at any size because it grows in a succession of leaders. It performs best in well drained soil in full sun.

Russian Olive
Elaeagnus augustifolia

The Russian Olive tree, Elaeagnus Angustifolia, is an excellent windbreak and wildlife tree. It is extremely tolerant of environmental factors. The best windbreak tree for high wind areas. Pictured is the Russian Olive in a tree form. Russian Olive trees can be made into a hedge by planting 10’ apart in the row. The Russian Olive has low water requirements and displays a high tolerance for salt and alkali. Its stems, buds, and leaves have a dense covering of silvery to rusty scales. Leaves are egg or lance-shaped. At three years of age, plants begin to flower and fruit. Highly aromatic, creamy yellow flowers appear in June and July and are later replaced by clusters of abundant silvery fruits. Wildlife loves the fruit. Prized for its silvery gray foliage. Prefers a sunny location and is tolerant of most soil types.

Autumn Olive
Elaeagnus umbellata

The Autumn Olive tree, Elaeagnus umbellata, is a medium sized tree or a large shrub reaching heights of 20 plus feet. The leaves, borne alternately on the stems, are generally oval in shape, approximately 1-3 inches long, and lack teeth. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green to grayish-green in color, while the lower surface is covered with silvery white scales, a conspicuous characteristic that can be seen from a distance when the leaves move. The small light yellow flowers bloom in late April and May. This deciduous tree is a good plant for fast growing windbreaks and for wildlife food and cover. The small fleshy fruits range in color from pink to red, are finely dotted with pale scales, and are produced in abundance each year. Wild life such as wild turkey, pheasant, quail and dove relish its fruit.

Beech - European
European Beech

The Beech, European, Fagus sylvatica, displays a dense, upright, oval form and is native to Europe. It grows more easily under cultivation than the American Beech, and has become a very popular ornamental tree in the United States. It is widely planted as a shade tree in northeastern and Pacific states. With its changing colors, European Beech remains a beautiful tree all year-round. Its leaves are a shimmering green when unfolding, then turning to a darker green in summer. In the fall, the leaves turn a rich russet brown. This beech prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun.

European Mountain-ash
European Mountainash

The Mountainash, European, Sorbus aucuparia, is known for its showy white flowers and its numerous bright red berries. Its alternate name "Rowan" comes from an old Scandinavian word meaning red. The odor of its white spring flowers is objectionable to some and should be considered when placing this tree near a walkway. The bark of this tree is smooth and dark gray, and is marked with horizontal lines. European Mountainash is planted for its ornamental qualities and as a source of food for birds. The fruits mature in the late spring but often remain on a tree through fall and into early winter. Best used as a specimen plant, it is upright when young and spreading at maturity. The Mountain Ash is a vigorous and rapidly growing tree and can reach heights of 25' to 40' and widths of 16' to 25'. Plant in a cool moist location and does better in full sun but will tolerate some shade. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils.

Korean Evodia
Evodia daniellii

The Korean Evodia, 'Evodia daniellii' is one of the few flowering trees that flower in the summer, rather than spring. White flowers are borne in mid summer and are quite showy. Fruit remains during the winter and adds interest to an uninteresting time of year.The bark of older stems and branches resembles beech. This plant appears to do better in good soils and seems somewhat intolerant of impoverished soils. This plant's small size will allow it to be used in restricted spaces, keeping in mind that it is as wide as tall. It is a good honey plant and the foliage looks good all summer.
