Viburnum - Arrowwood
Viburnum dentatum

The Arrowwood Viburnum, Viburnum dentatum, is a deciduous shrub which usually grows 6 to 8 feet in height, reaching 15 feet under ideal conditions. Spread is equal to height. The habit is dense and multistemmed with arching branches. The foliage is glossy dark green, fall colors are yellows, reds and purples. The creamy flowers are not fragrant and they appear in early summer for two weeks on 2 to 4 inch cymes. The fall fruit is a blue-black drupe, small, very attractive to birds which disseminate the seeds. An adaptable and hardy shrub, produces many suckers, which must be pruned back to keep the plant compact. It withstands high pH, heavy soils and various climatic conditions, some salt tolerance.

The Viburnum Blue Muffin, 'Viburnum dentatum 'Blue Muffin', a Proven Winners selection, is a new viburnum variety. Blue Muffin is more compact than other Arrowwood viburnum. This viburnum would be great in the residential landscape as a low hedge or a foundation plant. The white flowers make a great contast with the glossy green leaves in early to mid-summer. The intense blue fruit that inspired the name Blue Muffin appears in late summer and fall. The blue fruit adds interest to the landscape and is very attrractive to song birds.

Red Feather has an outstanding, long lasting, maroon fall color, and its autumn color is consistent from year to year. White flowers appear in June, followed by blue-back berries in the fall. The branching is upright and spreading, eventually arching over at the tips. It blooms in late June above the glossy, dark green foliage. Northern Burgundy has a spectacular fall color display with clusters of blue-black fruit hanging among the burgundy foliage. Its fruits attract birds. The fall color development is highly dependent on the individual plant; some plants turn yellow; some plants turn red to reddish purple. Northern Burgundy is very easy to grow and requires full sun to partial shade with soil that is from dry to fairly wet. It is easily transplanted and can grow 10-12 feet in height and width. This viburnum then produces clusters of blue-black berries, and this fruit is highly favored by birds. The summer foliage is crisp and dark green; the fall colors range from yellow to orange to red to burgundy, but varies in intensity. Chicago Lustre® Arrowwood Viburnum, viburnum dentatum 'Synnestvedt', is selected for its upright rounded, dense habit and glossy, deep green foliage that turns red-purple in fall. The creamy white flowers bloom in June and mature into clusters of globe-shaped fruit. The fruit are deep porcelain blue to blue-purple, maturing in August and providing food for the birds. Chicago Lustre is a medium-sized to large-sized ornamental shrub maturing at about 8-10 feet in height and width, although larger under optimum conditions. 'Forest Rouge Blackhawk' has an outstanding maroon fall color, for which the plant is appropriately named. It requires part shade to full sun and prefers sandy loam to some clay, but does best on well-drained sites with better than average moisture.

The Hahs Viburnum, Viburnum trilobum 'Hahs', is the best compact viburnum available! The foliage emerges a striking coppery color, and then ages to a lustrous, medium to dark, deep green. Its flower clusters are creamy white and appear in May. The fruit starts out green, then changes to yellow, then orange and finally red; fruit persists into the fall. 'Hahs' fall color is an outstanding deep purple. This great compact, slow-growing selection can be used as a specimen or screening plant. It scarcely ever develops the white flowers, let alone cranberries. Despite not fruiting and flowering, it can be an interesting deciduous shrub, small and mounded, much more densely leafed than the majority of viburnum. It is a low maintenance shrub, and is excellent as a foundation plant or low hedge. It grows 2-3 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide. Dwarf European Cranberrybush is adaptable to permanently moist to wet soils, dry soils, poor soils, soils of various pH, heat, drought, and pollution. It has a broad to rounded shape at maturity and grows 6 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide. It grows well in many exposures and soils, but does best in full sun with moderate moisture and well-drained soils. It does require some light shade in more southern areas. Shasta Doublefile can be planted as a specimen plant, massed group, or a shrub border. Blackhaw Viburnum, viburnum prunifolium, is an attractive, slow-growing, rounded shrub or small tree with glossy dark green foliage that turns to a shiny red in fall. It displays clusters of white flowers in May, followed by small, pink, changing to black, edible berries. It requires full sun to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun. It is adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, soils of various pH, permanently moist soils, dry soils, moderate heat, drought, and pollution. Blackhaw is multitrunked, has a densely twiggy upright growth habit in youth, but quickly becomes rounded and sprawling with age, growing 12-15 feet in height and 8-12 feet wide. Viburnum - Sargent Cranberrybush

The Sargent Cranberrybush Viburnum, Viburnum sargentii, is very similar to American Cranberrybush, but will not grow as large. This shrub has beautiful white blooms with a low-to-the-ground branching habit. It will form a large upright, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub. 'Sargent Cranberrybush' is noted for its fantastic red fruit display, which is effective through winter. In the fall, it displays an excellent red-purple color. 'Sargent Cranberrybush' Viburnum is very much like the 'Snowball' Viburnum, except that the leaves are thicker in texture, and it bears fruit. Sargent is very vigorous and resistant to aphids. Will fruit best in sun but will also grow and flower in partial shade.

The Spring Green Compact Cranberrybush Viburnum, Viburnum trilobum 'Spring Green', has an outstanding compact form which can be easily maintained to 4 feet in height. It produces orange fruit, which persists into winter, and then displays a stunning red fall color. It is less formal than other compact selections. 'Spring Green''s foliage emerges reddish and ages to a glossy dark green. The white flowers are very attractive, and somewhat fragrant. Its fall color is a red orange, and it has a limited fruit set. 'Spring Green' does best in moist, well-drained, loamy soils, but will tolerate less than ideal conditions and heavier clay soils. It does not tolerate prolonged drought or dense shade. It makes an excellent low hedge or specimen plant.

The berries hang on into winter and provide food for birds. Dark green foliage develops an outstanding red fall color. Does best on well-drained sites with better than average moisture. Use as a specimen plant or effective in small masses and borders. American Cranberrybush is round-topped and fairly dense under cultivation, but can be poorly branched and open in native habitat. Cranberrybush Viburnum prefers a rich soil with ample moisture. It does well in full sun or shade and can become leggy and requires occasional renewal pruning to keep it in good form. It grows 10-12 feet tall and as wide and makes an excellent deciduous shrub for screening.

It is much hardier than the leatherleaf viburnum, and it grows well at both extremes of its hardiness range. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil, but extremely windy sites should be avoided. Usually planted in mass groupings, it often is used in recreational areas and commercial plantings such as malls. It grows 10 feet in height and width.

Bigleaf Periwinkle
Vinca major

The Bigleaf Periwinkle, Vinca major, is also known as Greater Periwinkle, Big Perwinkle and Large Periwinkle. The plant is shrub-like and grows to 12" tall with trailing ascending stems; 1-3 feet long. The leaves are dark green and bigger than that of vinca minor. It has solitary violet flowers at the end of the stem. This ornamental plant is fast growing. The Greater Periwinkles are an evergreen, creeping plant with long trailing or arching stems. The flowers are carried in the short, ascending stems. It flowers from April through frost. The leaves are shiny, bright-green and broad with a blunt base with hairy margins. It thrives in shady and damp areas; it will melt in full sun in the southern portion of its range. It is usually sold as an annual in zones 3-5 otherwise perennial. It can be used on banks or in other rough locations provided soil is suitable. Cut it back hard in the spring to rid plants of discolored foliage and to enjoy new growth.

Periwinkle - Wojos Gem
Vinca Major 'Wojo's Gem'

The Periwinkle 'Wojo's Gem', Vinca Major 'Wojo's Gem' is a new selection of trailing vinca with creamy yellow centers edged and flecked with dark green. It is dIstinct from Vinca 'Illumination' with larger leaves is hardy in protected spots in zone 6.Use in as a spreading groundcover to brighten shade gardens. Beautiful cascading down slopes, banks, walls and curbs. Pest and disease free. Herbaceous perennial in warmer zones and an annual in colder zones.

Periwinkle
Vinca minor

Periwinkle, Vinca minor, is also known as Trailing Myrtle, Dwarf Periwinkle and Creeping Myrtle. This species of Periwinkle is one of the most popular and widely used ground covers. Trailing stems with smooth, evergreen leaves root at the nodes as they go along the ground and quickly spread to form an attractive ground cover. Tubular, lavender blue, phlox-like flowers appear in the leaf axils in spring and continue to flower intermittently throughout summer into fall. Foliage will mound up to 6" tall. Periwinkles are used as a versatile ground cover and provide good cover for bulb beds. Effective on slopes or banks to stabilize soils and prevent erosion. Easily grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It tolerates full shade, but it prefers moist, humusy soils in part shade. Plant 12-18" apart to cover large areas. This evergreen perennial is similar in all ways to Vinca Major except the flower is a little smaller.

Periwinkle - Illimuniation
Vinca minor 'Illumination'

The Vinca Minor 'Illumination', produces near continuous foliage changes. Spring growth emerges chartreuse then brightens to golden yellow. Each yellow leaf is edged with a grass green margin. Later in the year plants turn to cream on attractive pink stems. Direct sun will prematurely bleach foliage. Blooms in late spring and continues sporadically through the summer. Flowers are Dutch blue, 1 inch wide for high contrast against foliage. Dramatic alone in hanging baskets for long golden tresses. Ideal foliage accent for color pots too. In the garden use as a spreading groundcover to brighten shade gardens. Beautiful cascading down slopes, banks, walls and curbs. Pest and disease free. Herbaceous perennial.
