Peony - Tree - Shimane Island Collection
Paeonia

The Shimane Island Tree Peony Collection, 'Paeonia', contains 3 plants, 1 each of High Noon, Koukamon, & Shima-nishiki. These Tree Peonies display huge, ruffled, satin-like flowers that are super hardy! Every garden needs a tree peony. There was a time, many years ago in ancient China, when the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself. We're not sure what the penalty was for infringing this law, but it can't have been very pleasant. Fortunately for us, tree peonies are now slightly more available. There are very few plants that can compete with a tree peony in full bloom. They flower from late April to early May but the flowering season does vary from year to year. A mature plant can have in excess of a hundred flowers and these can be 10" or more across! The flowers range in color from maroon, crimson, scarlet, various shades of pink, to pure white. There are also tree peonies with yellow or purple flowers. The Chinese refer to the tree peony as 'Moutan'. This has been variously translated but probably means 'The Emperor Flower'. While the tree peony originated in China, it had found its way to Japan by the 8th Century AD. Japanese tree peonies tend to have less double flowers than their Chinese peers, and the flowers are more open and delicate. Growing only 4-5' tall, these exceptional Tree Peonies are sub-zero hardy and bloom for a lifetime.

The Tree Peony Yoshino gawa, 'Paeonia', produces enormous bright pale pink of rare beauty.

Native American Plum
Prunus americana

The Native American Plum tree, Prunus americana, is also known as the Native Plum, Hedge Plum, Sloe or Wild Plum. Native American Plum trees are small, deciduous, single trunk trees or a multi-stemmed shrub which occurs in rocky or sandy soils in woodlands, pastures, abandoned farms, streams and hedgerows. This deciduous tree typically grows to 15-25' tall with a broad, spreading crown. As a shrub, it suckers freely and can form large colonies. The 2 to 5 inch white flowers appear in early spring before the foliage appears. Flowers are followed by edible, round, red plums with bright yellow pulp which ripen in early summer. This species is usually grown for ornamental value and not for fruit production, however. Although the plums can be eaten raw, the quality is somewhat poor. The fruits are perhaps better used for preserves and jellies. The leaves turn yellow to red in autumn for great fall color. Branches and twigs are an attractive dark reddish-brown. Wildlife are attracted to the sweet fruits.

Flowers are followed by small, cherry-like, edible, red to yellow plums which ripen in early to mid summer. Although the plums may be eaten raw, they are somewhat tart and acidic, and are perhaps best used in preserves and jellies. The toothed, narrow, bright green leaves appear on branches and twigs that are an attractive reddish-brown and sometimes have thorny lateral branchlets. Native Americans regularly consumed the fruit fresh or dried it for winter. The sweet fruit is eaten by deer, bear, fox and racoon. This flowering tree is a true ornamental.
