Meadow Rue Lavender Mist, Thalictrum rochebrunianum 'Lavender Mist', is tall and deer resistant. Thalictrum 'Lavender Mist' will produce an impressive backdrop for a natural looking, wildflower garden with its open airy habit. In mid to late summer, 'Lavender Mist' produces lavender-purple flowers that grow on strong, self-supporting dark purple stems over low mounds of green foliage. A beautiful addition to any landscape! 'Lavender Mist' likes humusy soil, moist and well draining, in dappled sunlight. It is highly intolerant of humid heat so probably not worth attempting in south since it is intolerant of intense heat and humidity. Deadhead to prolong blooming season. May require support during flowering. Best used in borders, meadows and naturalized areas. Most attractive when mass planted.

Meadowsweet, Filipendula purpurea 'Kahome', is a compact and unique dwarf selection. This meadowsweet displays feathery plumes of flowers that are in a gorgeous rosy-pink shade, held above a low mound of ferny leaves. 'Kahome' is especially useful in moist areas, even growing well at the waterside, and it is a shorter and maybe a bit later variety. These rose-pink flowers of 'Kahome' bloom over a long period and can be planted in pots or directly in the garden. They are also very beautiful in bouquets. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring. Use throughout your flower garden for a display of magnificent blooms that seem to go on forever.

Herb - Peppermint
Mentha silvestris crispa

The Peppermint, 'Mentha silvestris crispa', is a spreading plant with numerous upright shoots that may reach a height of 2 feet. Dark green leaves are produced from reddish stems. Peppermint grows best in moist soils. Peppermint makes a refreshing herbal tea. Use 2 TBSP of fresh or 1 TBSP dried for each cup of tea and steep for 5 minutes. The aromatic foliage has a classic peppermint flavor. Use fresh leaves in salads and iced teas. To control vigourous spreading habit of mints plant in containers sunk into the ground.Peppermint blooms in the summer. Plant in sun or partial sun. Allow about 18-24" between plants in beds or borders. Water 2-3 times per week until established. Peppermint is thought to have and is frequently used to relieve stomach and bowel spasms and promote the expulsion of flatus. Herbal users promote drinking peppermint tea during meals or after meals to aid digestion. Lots of fresh mint leaves, chopped with some whole for garnish, improves every fruit salad and most green salads.

Mint - Spearmint
Mentha spicata

The Mint Spearmint, 'Mentha spicata', is a hardy perennial mint that has more uses than most herbs, such as, teas, cooking, and baths. Ever tried mint water? It is much more refreshing than a soft drink. The Spearmint Mint has pale, pinkish purple flowers during mid to late summer. The mint spreads quickly and can be invasive if not controlled. Mint is commonly grown in pots stuck in the ground for control. Mint is used for a variety of culinary and medicinal uses.The Mint is used in wide range of foods and drinks including tea, mint water, a sprig in lemonade, chopped and added to fresh cooked vegetables, enhances fish, meats, veal, eggplant, beans, fruit salad and jellies. It is reputedly used for indigestion, flatulence and colic. A cup of mint tea is used for insomnia and the leaves can be chewed for bad breath. Plant in the spring in most any kind of soil. This plant can be grown inside in a pot.

Herb - Spearmint
Mentha spicata

The Spearmint, 'Mentha spicata', is the classic mint. Spearmint is also known as mint, brown mint, garden mint, lamb mint, mackerel mint, Our Lady's mint, and sage of Bethlehem. Spearmint is used in teas, flavored teas, sauces, jellies, and vinegars; leaves in fruit salad, and in peas, plus many more. Spearmint marries well with lamb, and minted apple jelly and lamb are a classic twosome. The Mint leaves, chopped or whole, are great in salads. Considered the most versatile and popular garden mint, spearmint has a fruity aroma and flavor.Spearmint is grown commercially for the essential oil, which is used in gum. The plant grows in wet areas and reaches about 1m in height. This is the Spearmint used to flavor candies, beverages, and many other food items. The plant is easy to grow if wet soil is provided. The spike of purplish flowers is produced in the summer. Cut back to the ground at least twice/summer.

Virginia Blue Bells
Mertensia virginica

The Virginia Blue Bells, 'Mertensia virginiana', display dainty clusters of pink flower buds open to porcelain blue bell-shaped flowers. Naturalizing over time, they are very hardy and easy to grow. The pastel colors of the flowers and foliage are soft and soothing. Some of the common names are Virginia Cowslip, Lungwort Oysterleaf, and Roanoke Bells. Virginia bluebell plants grow 12 to 24 inches tall. They prefer light shade to partial sun in moist wooded areas with rich soil. The foliage dies down by mid-summer. They can survive in semi-shaded floodplain areas along rivers, bluffs, and flower gardens.

Four OClock - Marvel of Peru
Mirabilis jalapa

The Four O'clock Marvel of Peru, 'Mirabilis jalapa', has flowers that often open after 4 pm for late day drama. They are lightly fragrant. Four O'clock grows and flowers almost anywhere including hot, windy spots. The 2 inch long, 1 inch wide tubular shaped flowers appear in colors of crimson, red, scarlet, white, pink, and yellow. The Marvel of Peru blooms in summer through fall.Four O'clocks prefer full sun but will tolerate light shade. They also tolerate a wide range of soils but they prefer a sandy well drained location. Water frequently for best results. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Marvel of Perus are excellent for pots or large tubs, and they make an great annual hedge.

Grass - Little Kitten Miscanthus
Miscanthus 'Little Kitten'

The Ornamental Grass 'Little Kitten', 'Miscanthus 'Little Kitten', is one ornamental grass that cannot be missed. Being similar to a cat’s tongue, this Miscanthus forms a foliage clump to only 15" tall. The pointed, narrow leaves are showy, with plumes of silver-white with pink and reddish tinges that appear in August. The plumes will last well into the winter and can be used as fresh or dried flower cuttings. 'Little Kitten' should be planted in full sun to part shade and prefers a moist soil area. Try this ornamental grass as a front of the border plant with Coreopsis, Echinacea or Liatris.

Grass - Variegated Miscanthus
Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light'

The Grass 'Variegated Miscanthus Grass', Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light', is also know as 'Morning Light' Maiden Grass is a very popular miscanthus. It boasts white-edged variegated, narrow leaves. It is quite attractive, the green blades have added highlights of creamy-white margins and mid-veins creating a shimmering silvery appearance. Its appearance is fine textured and it has a compact growth habit. This plant works well as a specimen plant in the garden, or can be used in container gardens. The reddish bronze blooms appear in the fall. Which adds visual excitement to shrub borders. It displays delicate reddish-bronze plumes in late summer. Place in full sun for best foliage coloration. Accepts dry conditions.

Bee Balm - Marshall Delight

The Monarda ‘Marshall's Delight’,Monarda didyma, also known as Bee Balm, Bergamont, Horsemint, Oswego Tea, is a clump-forming perennial that has tubular, two-lipped, hot pink flowers with dark green aromatic foliage. ‘Marshall's Delight’ stands at 36’ high and has a plant spread of 24-36” and blooms from July to August. If deadheaded, longer bloom times will be encouraged. Monarda needs to be planted in full sun, but will tolerate afternoon shade. Marshall's Delights are best grown in rich soil in a well-drained area, not being allowed to dry out. The leaves of Monarda can be used for teas and in salads. Attracting hummingbirds, butterflies and bees, particularly when massed, Monarda provides color and contrast for the perennial border, wild garden, meadow, and herb garden or along ponds or streams.

If deadheaded, longer bloom times will be encouraged. Monarda needs to be planted in full sun, but will tolerate afternoon shade. Rasberry Wines are best grown in rich soil in a well-drained area, not being allowed to dry out. The leaves of Monarda can be used for teas and in salads. Attracting hummingbirds, butterflies and bees, particularly when massed, Monarda provides color and contrast for the perennial border, wild garden, meadow, herb garden or along ponds or streams.

Bee Balm - Dotted Mint
Monarda lambada

The Bee Balm Dotted Mint, 'Monarda lambada', is a variety of Bee Balm that has a unique and dramatic flower cluster. To protest tea taxes, the original colonists drank Bee Balm tea. It is native to to the eastern United States. The Dotted Mint has a pleasant odor of mint and basil and it attracts hummingbirds. The Bee Balm stems are topped with 2 to 3 inch tight clusters of light yellow flowers having purple spots and large pink bracts. They bloom in mid-summer for about 6 to 8 weeks.The Dotted Mint Bee Balm prefer full sun except in areas that have very hot summer days. In those areas, light shade is recommended. They prefer moist, well drained soils. Bee Balm does not like soil to dry out. In the fall, cut all stems of Dotted Mint to the ground for winter. Plant in the spring about 2 weeks before last average frost date or in late summer/early fall at least 2 months before first frost. This Bee Balm is used for cut flowers and is edible. It can be used to make tea or chopped and added to recipes for duck and pork.

The Crocosmia Emily McKenzie, 'Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora emily mckenzie', a spring planted corm, produces beautiful orange flowers with red centers. The flowers are very showy, and they make great cut flowers. The Crocosmia is also commonly known as Monbretia. Crocosmias are clump forming and bloom best in crowded conditions. This plant has attractive foliage. Hummingbirds flock to their blooms.

Crocosmia - George Davidson

Crocosmia - Masonorum
Montbretia 'Masonorum'

The Crocosmia, 'Crocosmia masonorum', produces 12-30 brilliant orange-red florets per stem and they multiply rapidly. The gracefully arching stems add a festive brightness to the mid to late summer garden when many other flowering plants have finished their show. This Crocosmia has sword-like foliage. They are great for borders and cut flowers. Place them in full sun for best results.

Mountain sandwort
Mountain sandwort

Mountain sandwort, Arenaria Montana, is a very classy little alpine or rock garden plant. It forms a low evergreen cushion of dark green leaves, bearing loads of rather large, cup shaped, white flowers during the spring months. The leaves are lance shaped, grayish green. Mountain Sandwort is a hardy, little ground cover that may be so happy in moist gardens that it seems impossible to get rid of! It is sometimes used as a lawn substitute. Mountain Sandwort is great for edging paths, between flagstones, in walls, or trough gardens. It requires a well-drained site, and it is drought tolerant, once established. Easily divided in spring or early fall.

Creeping Wirevine

The Creeping Wire vine, Muehlenbeckia, is a vine with strongly rooting and densely intertwining stems. The roughly circular leaves are 1cm across and the white, strongly scented flowers are borne in small clusters, followed by shining black fruits.vine, Muehlenbeckia, is different, odd, down right strange.This New Zealand gem has dark, wiry stems that contort, curl, and bend like nothing you've seen. Small, attractive emerald green leaflets. A choice and very hardy addition to combos.

Mum - Bolero

Mum Bolero, Dendranthema 'Bolero', is known as a Hardy Garden Mum and creates a beautiful display for your fall landscape. 'Bolero' is an abundant bloomer with 3.5 inch wide, deep gold, daisy-like flowers that appear on tight, mounded plants. These plants are easy to grow in well drained soil and full sun. 'Bolero' can be fertilized up to three times during the growing season, and should be pinched back several times before the fourth of July to maintain a shorter, more compact habit. The blooms are perfect for cut flower arrangements, and known to attract butterflies. Dendranthema blooms late in the season, from the end of summer well into fall, and returns reliably year after year.
