Lilac Alexander Pink

The Alexander Pink Lilac, Syringa x prestoniae 'Alexander Pink', is a nice, bright-pink late-blooming Canadian Lilac. It is very similar in habit to ‘Royalty’ Lilac. A vigorous, non-suckering lilac, 'Alexander Pink' is extremely hardy . It needs good drainage and does best in full sun. Promptly remove faded flower panicles before seeds set, since this will increase bloom for the following year. Prune as needed immediately after flowering. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun. Tolerates light shade, but best bloom quality and disease resistance occur in full sun. 'Alexander Pink' prefers rich, moist, neutral soils.

Lilac - Josee
Lilac Josee

Lilac Josee, Syringa 'Josee', is an outstanding variety with a dwarf habit, reblooming flowers, and superb mildew resistance. At just 4-6' tall and wide, 'Josee' is the perfect choice for smaller gardens, or even in large patio containers! The delightfully fragrant, lavender-pink flowers erupt into bloom in late spring. Unlike other lilacs though, the show is not over in easy summer! Syringa 'Josee' will surprise northern gardeners with reliable rebloom all summer and fall and southern gardens may get a flush of rebloom in the fall! Best in a fertile, slightly alkaline soil with good drainage. Mulch to retain soil moisture; lightly prune immediately after flowering to encourage re-bloom and maintain compact habit. Looks stunning in combination planters, mass plantings or borders.

Lilac - Royalty
Lilac Royalty

The Royalty Lilac, Syringa x josiflexa 'Royalty', has deep green, handsome foliage that is leathery with purplish undertones. This foliage is somewhat coarse. Dark purple buds open to a lilac color about 2 to 3 weeks after common lilacs. 'Royalty' Lilac is prized for its showy clusters of large, fragrant purple blooms in late summer, as well as its disease resistance. After most other lilacs are done for the year, 'Royalty' is going strong. Its long lasting blooms are perfect for fresh cut arrangements. Excellent for use as hedge, background or specimen. It is a beautiful non-suckering shrub.

Lilac - Lilac Sunday
Lilac Sunday Lilac

The Lilac Sunday Lilac, Syringa x chinensis 'Lilac Sunday', is an exciting introduction from the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. The flowers of Lilac Sunday are a fragrant, pale purple. Although each individual flower is small, the flower panicles are produced not only at the tips of the branches, but also from the lateral buds along the stems at a distance of two or more feet from the branch tips. Therefore, the branching is willowy and arching, and it looks as though flowers are over 2 feet long. It does best in full sun, with a less acidic pH soil. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds and requires average water needs; water regularly; do not overwater. Lilac Sunday Lilac prefers full sun, good drainage and air circulation; best bloom is in full sun. It can be used in many situations, including shrub borders, informal hedges and perennial borders. Being very showy and fragrant, it makes a wonderful screen or border specimen.

Spice Bush
Lindera bezoin

The Spicebush, Lindera bezoin, is a native deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit which typically grows 6-12' high. Clusters of tiny, aromatic, greenish-yellow flowers bloom along the branches in early spring before the foliage emerges. Flowers of female plants give way to bright red drupes which mature in fall and are attractive to birds. Female plants need a male pollinator in order to set fruit, however. Drupes are very attractive, but are largely hidden by the foliage until the leaves drop. Thick, oblong, light green leaves turn an attractive yellow in autumn. Leaves are aromatic when crushed. The larva of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly feeds on the leaves of this shrub. Lindera is named for the Swedish botanist, Johann Lindler. It is used for shrub borders, shade or woodland gardens, moist areas along streams or ponds, native plant gardens or naturalized plantings. They are easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Fall color is best in sunny areas. Tolerates full shade, but habit becomes more open and wide-spreading.
