Moss - Irish

It is extremely dense and spready by creeping stems to form it mossy carpet. ‘Irish Moss’ is not known for its flowering but its foliage. It has a plant height of 1-2” and a spread of 6-12”. ‘Irish Moss’ performs best in full sun and in moist, well-drained soil. The tiny white flowers will appear late spring into early summer. Use ‘Irish Moss between paving stones, rock walls, as an edging plant or as a small-scale groundcover.

The Salvia Lady in Red, 'Salvia coccinea', is an elegant alternative to the more familiar scarlet salvia varieties usually seen in bedding schemes. The flower-spikes have all the vivacity of those popular plants, but they are longer and less cluttered with blooms, which gives the plants an airy grace and more of a shrub-like appearance. Pruning these plants after flowering will produce sideshoots in spring for cuttings. They are very uniform plants and are heat and drought tolerant. This red-spiked variety performs well in containers and small space gardens. They are virtually irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.

Like most mints, pineapple sage has square stems.The bruised foliage of Pineapple sage really does smell like fresh pineapple. The red tubular flowers emerge in August. Use pineapple sage in the center of beds and borders, where its open, airy structure will not hide other plantings. It will grow to shrub size in a single season. Pineapple sage is often grown as an annual and often grown in containers. Northern gardeners can cut pineapple sage back and dig it up in autumn to overwinter indoors.The sages are tough and easy to grow and many attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Place this flower in full sun and in average well drained garden soil for best results.Blue Victoria Salvias require moisture but not too much. The ideal soil condition is slightly dry. Do not over water or over fertilize. Over fertilization causes more vegetative growth and less flowers. More flowers will be produced if the plants are deadheaded often. Clary Sage

In addition to its numerous panicles of flowers, the entire plant releases a pleasant garden fragrance. The flowers are pale lilac, 1 inch long tubular blooms, with very prominent rose-red bracts on 2 to 3 foot tall square stems. The Clary Sage blooms in summer through early fall.Clary Sages prefer full sun and average garden soil. The soil must be well drained and not overly fertile. This Sage is a great plant for dry, rocky soils. Plant this easy-to-grow plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Clary Sage is used for tea, and the fresh or dried leaves are used the same way as sage. The leaves are also used to make sachets and potpourri.

The Solidgao Goldrush should be planted in full sun and at the front of beds and borders or in containers. Place them in well drained soil and fertilize lightly. Too much fertilzer will produce a lot of foliage and fewer flowers.

The Grass 'Indian Grass', Sorghastrum nutans, is a clump forming native grass that reaches 4-5' in height. Golden, plume-like seed heads are formed in the summer. Indian grass is one of the most important native tall grasses. There are prominent claw-like lobes or "rabbit-ears" at the point where the leaf blade attaches to the stem. Indian Grasses have plume-like seed heads that turn a chestnut brown, and later take on a grey coloration. This grass is fairly tolerant to drought conditions. Seeds are consumed by birds and small mammals.

The clean grey-green foliage looks great all summer long, unlike many other varieties which need to be cut back by early summer. The seedhead has a faint but unmistakable fragrance, often described as resembling a combination of fresh popcorn and cilantro.The highly nutritious seeds are much sought after by birds. Grows two feet high on any well-drained soil, and does particularly well on dry sand. It has an upright, arching growth habit. After sowing, flower heads will appear in 16 weeks.Pony Tails prefer full sun and well drained infertile soils. It is very drought tolerant, but even moisture produces the most flower heads. The powdery blue flowers bloom from July until frost have a plant height of 14” and a plant spread of 18-24”. ‘Honeysong Purple’ Aster will do best in a full sun area with morning shade and well-drained soil. It should not stay wet while in dormancy. Great for summer color in beds, borders or containers it produces excellent cut flowers. To increase bloom time, deadhead after the first initial flowering.

The Bracteantha Strawburst Yellow, Bracteantha 'Strawburst™ Yellow' PPAF, has excellent heat tolerance and since it is also frost hardy, it will perform all season long. 'Strawburst™ Yellow' PPAF has outstanding flower color and a well-branched habit. The flowers are the largest we have seen on any other Bracteantha. Formerly known as Helichrysums, Bracteantha bracteata belongs to the Asteraceae family and are affectionately known as Paper Daisies, the Everlasting Daisy or Strawflowers. Strawburst Yellow make wonderful dried flowers, but if you pick them too early they may fail to open properly and if you pick them too late they may not last in your vase all that long. This plant can be a perennial in zones 9-11. In zones 3-8 it is an annual only.

Streptocarpella - Blue

The Streptocarpella Blue, 'Streptocarpella' is a shade loving member of the African Violet family. The lovely blue trumpet shaped blooms hover over the felted leaves. Streptocarpella is a small, tender basket plant from southern Africa that quickly grows to 8 - 12 inches tall with a spread of 12 inches across. Streptocarpella should be grown in a well drained, organic potting mix in either a hanging basket, window box, or decorative container. Hummingbirds find this plant irresistable. Streptocarpella Blue are absolutely great for baskets and pots. In warmer zones this plant can also be a perennial.

The Streptocarpus Black Panther, 'Streptocarpus', a Proven Selections plant, is a Cape Primrose with fresh green foliage and the deepest purple flowers imaginable. The flowers display yellow "fangs" at the throat. Streptacarpus plants are tough and they will do equally well under natural or artificial light. They are easy to groom and shape. Black Panther blooms very heavily and are spectacular.For zone 11, this plant can also be a perennial.

The Strobilanthes Persian Shield, 'Strobilanthes dyerianus', is an Athens Select variety. In summers with sweltering heat, this plant displays multi-colored foliage that is always exquisite. The leaves are a flushed purple with silver iridescence and dark purple underneath. Warmer temperatures enhance the leaf color. Persian Shield performs best in partial shade, planted in well drained organic soil. This plant has an upright habit and can reach 3 foot in height. They are widely used in landscape beds or in mixed containers. Persian Shield tends to get tall and fall over, so pinch back a few times in the first half of the growing season to induce branching and bushier foliage.For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial.

Summersweet Vanilla Spice, Clethra 'Vanilla Spice™', has attractive glossy, dark green leaves. Its extra large pure white flowers are very fragrant and act as a magnet for butterflies. Each flower is roughly the size of a dime and about twice the size of any other Clethra. 'Vanilla Spice' offers a wonderful fragrance during the late summer months. The show begins in late summer in most climates and continues through the first part of fall, ceasing only when the temperature really drops. This Clethra 'Vanilla Spice' belongs in the front of the shrub border, the foundation, or as a hedge in any sun-soaked part of the garden. It is even compact enough for containers! It may need some wind protection in coldest areas. Remarkably tolerant of a variety of conditions, including roadsides and seashores, it prefers moist locations in partial shade, but will take full sun. If necessary, prune in early spring.
