Rhododendron - Ramapo
Ramapo Rhododendron

Rhododendron - Ramapo, Rhododendron 'Ramapo', is a dense-growing evergreen shrub that has a very dwarf compact habit. Clusters of flowers are about 1" long, light violet-purple, no markings. Large trusses of the showy flowers are a beautiful contrast to the leaves. The bluish green foliage makes it an asset to the landscape all year around. Ramapo is very effective when a smaller accent is needed. If you have a small garden with little room for a large rhododendron - this dwarf rhodo may be for you! Rhododendrons are ornamental, acidic-soil loving broad-leaf evergreens. They grow best in partial shade. Plant in a location protected from strong winter winds. Ramapo loves to be planted with pre-moistened peat moss. Well drained soil is a must! Use in mass, group or specimen for shrub borders, mixed borders, woodland gardens and shade gardens. This dwarf is exceptional as a container-grown plant and bonsai. Ramapo also prefers cooler regions.

Potentilla - Red Ace
Red Ace Potentilla

Potentilla - Red Ace, Potentilla fruticosa 'Red Ace', is a deciduous, showy shrub with flowers of rich vermillion, and its undersides become a pale yellow in summer. Flowers change from red to yellow under intense heat. Red Ace's densely branched form is useful for a colorful accent or border plant. It is a moderate grower and reaches 2 to 3 feet in height, and 3 to 4 feet in width. It prefers full sun and tolerates poor soils, but needs a regular watering schedule during the first growing season. This will establish a deep, extensive root system. Red Ace is a hardy, easy care plant that makes a great border, hedge, or ground cover. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear annually to shape.

Red Cloud Dogwood
Red Cloud Dogwood

The Dogwood, Red Cloud, Cornus florida 'Red Cloud', has leaves that are crinkled around the margins and pink bracts. It offers year round interest with red to pink spring flowers, distinctive, oval, vertically curved leaves in summer, and scarlet red leaves in the fall with glossy red berries that persist into winter. These fruits are also a favorite of many birds as well as squirrels, rabbits and raccoons. Red Cloud Dogwood prefers a acidic, moist, well drained site. Partial shade is preferable for best performance. Dogwoods are somewhat susceptible to drought, so be sure that sufficient water is provided during dry periods.

It is very adaptable and thrives in areas with harsh growing conditions. Its graceful, slender, pointed leaves are tinged with red. Red Gnome displays a stunning deep burgundy-red fall foliage. Because of its outstanding red stem color, it is a great choice for a dramatic winter affect. It makes a fast growing narrow hedge or screen. It has a height of 3 to 4 feet and width of 4 to 5 feet.

Azalea - Red Mollis Hybrid
Red Mollis Hybrid Azalea

The Azalea, Red Mollis Hybrid, Rhododendron x kosteranum, is a lush, deciduous shrub that bears a splendid supply of vibrant, reddish orange, funnel-shaped blooms in an unsurpassed brilliance in spring and early summer. Red Mollis bears large clusters of 2 to 3 inch flowers and has been hybridized to be hardy even in more northern parts of the country. Flowers are borne in large, showy trusses in mid-spring just before the leaves emerge. The deciduous hybrid azalea is known for excellent fall color and unsurpassed spring flowers. If given too much shade or if plants are allowed to get too dry in midsummer, blooming will be reduced the following year. This azalea needs full sun. Red Mollis also requires acidic soils and excellent drainage. This azalea is usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions.

Red Twig Dogwood Stems
Red Twig Dogwood Stems

The Red Twig Dogwood Stems display the deep red of Red Twig dogwood stems, which compliment any décor inside or out. Indoors, arrange the stems in a vase and use as a dramatic centerpiece. Outside, place the stems in planters with evergreen branches for a little color in the winter months. Each bundle contains 5-10 stems, each stem measuring approximately 3-4' long.

Buckthorn - Fine Line®
Rhamnus frangula ‘Ron Williams’

The FINE LINE© Buckthorn, 'Rhamnus frangula ‘Ron Williams’ is a great new landscape plant. FINE LINE® combines the feathery foliage of ‘Aspenifolia’ with the narrow upright habit of ‘Columnaris.’ Use FINE LINE® in narrow hedgerows for privacy, as an accent plant, or even in a patio container. It’s a great vertical accent for the perennial garden, and the narrow habit is perfect for framing entrances. This is an extremely useful, architectural plant for the home or commercial landscape. This cultivar produces very few fruit, none of which have been shown to be viable. FINE LINE© has proven to be non-invasive in university studies. It is a responsible and environmentally friendly replacement for weedy, older varieties. FINE LINE® is very adaptable to any conditions and prefers well-drained soil. Best if pruned in late fall to remove dead or broken branches however no pruning is really required. Medium moisture, can tolerate dry conditions once established. Attracts birds in the fall. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs.

Rhododendron - Haaga
Rhododendron Haaga

The Rhododendron Haaga, 'Haaga Rhododendron', is a new, hardy, dwarf variety from the University of Helsinki, Finland. It produces dark pink flowers which contrast nicely with the dark green, coarse foliage. The Haaga will begin to bloom in May. This plant needs excellent drainage, mulching and a peat moss soil additive. Roots will rot in poorly drained soil. It will not do well in windy sites. This dense evergreen shrub is a highly valued landscape ornamental. The large groups of showy pink flowers appear on even young plants. The Haaga is a very effective accent plant.

Rhododendron - Helsinki University
Rhododendron 'Helsinki University'

The Nova Zembla is very effective as an accent plant. For best results, feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom and keep the roots cool with a thick layer of mulch. This plant will attract butterflies and other wildlife. It is generally heat and sun tolerant and perhaps the most widely grown and successful red hybrid for harsh climates.

Rhododendron - Pohjolas Daughter
Rhododendron 'Pohjola's Daughter'

The Rhododendron, Pohjola's Daughter, 'Rhododendron 'Pohjola's Daughter', exhibits large fuchsia-pink buds that open shell pink and slowly turn white. Pohjola's Daughter is very hardy and flowers in early-midseason. The low mounding habit of this plant allows for placement in a myriad of landscapes. Pohjola's Daughter is a low dense bush, growing about 3 feet high, with much forking and it is often broader than it is tall. Rhododendron like acidic soils that are high in organic matter. High organic content assures that the soil will retain moisture, yet also drain well when too wet. These optimum conditions are typically achieved by planting into soil that has been amended with generous quantities of peat moss or organic materials.

Azalea - Pink and Sweet
Rhododendron viscosum 'Pink and Sweet'

Pink and Sweet Azalea, Rhododendron viscosum 'Pink and Sweet', extends the season with color since it is a late-blooming azalea. Purplish-pink flowers have a golden flare in the throat and a spicy sweet fragrance. Striking blossoms are set off by deep green foliage that turns red each fall. These sweet azaleas are so well named since they are lovely and very fragrant. Few landscape plants are more colorful than Pink and Sweet or offer as many opportunities for your landscape. Pink and Sweet performs best in well drained, acid, organic soil that maintains a uniform moisture level all year. It grows 4 feet wide and 3 feet wide. Site selection is very important. Azaleas prefer light to moderate shade and watering newly planted azaleas is essential. This is especially true when planting in spring. Their shallow roots will dry out quickly during periods of limited rainfall.

Sumac - Fragrant
Rhus aromatica

The Fragrant Sumac, Rhus aromatica, is a small shrub, most commonly encountered on limestone uplands, occasionally on acidic sites. It occasionally reaches tree size. Fragrant sumac is a pioneer species, establishing rapidly from seed after heavy disturbance, particularly fire. Like other sumacs, it forms clonal clumps, but not as extensively as the other species. Fragrant sumac is a short-lived pioneer, which reproduces from seed or clonally via root suckers. Seed production is moderately abundant, and seeds are dispersed by birds. Lifespan is about 20-30 years, though clones can live substantially longer. Fruit is important as winter bird food. This is an important deer browsing species. The fruits, steeped in cool water, yield a refreshing drink, like lemonade. Native Americans used the bark of all sumacs as an astringent, and leaves and bark can be used for tanning leather, due to the high tannin content.

Sumac - Smooth
Rhus glabra

The Smooth Sumac, Rhus glabra, is a shade-intolerant pioneer on heavily disturbed sites, and is particularly common along road and railroad rights-of-way. Usually in clumps of several to many individuals in a clone, rarely more than 25 stems in one clone. Sumac will often be found within the first year following fire. Smooth sumac is a short-lived pioneer, which reproduces clonally via root suckers. Seed production is moderately abundant, and seeds are dispersed by birds. Growth is rapid. Lifespan is about 20-30 years, though clones can persist for centuries. Fruit is important as winter bird food. This is an important deer browse species. It is suited to group plantings in small to large yards. It is especially useful in attracting birds to naturalized yards.

Skunkbush fruits, which persist through fall and winter, provide a food for birds and small mammals when other foods are scarce or unavailable. It may form dense thickets that provide good hiding and nesting cover for small birds and mammals. Skunkbush has been widely planted at recreation sites, rest areas, and roadsides. It is useful for windbreaks, shelterbelts, and because of the strong root development, for erosion control. It is generally drought tolerant.

Sumac - Staghorn
Rhus typhina

The Staghorn Sumac, Rhus typhina, is the most well-known sumac. Its branches resemble deer antlers. Staghorn sumac reaches 25 feet in height at maturity with an equal spread. It is not as tolerant of poorly drained soils as other sumacs. The large dark crimson - or rarely orange to yellow - pinnate leaves of this sumac have 15-31 narrow, leaflets that can be up to long. The stems and fruits of Staghorn Sumac are densely hairy, as in the "velvet stage" of a stag's antlers. These colorful, nonpoisonous shrubs or small trees are rhizomatous. The large clumps form bright splashes of color along forest margins, road banks, and fencerows and in old fields over much of the Appalachians.

Rhus typhina 'Bailtiger'

The Tiger Eyes® Sumac, Rhus typhina 'Bailtiger' is a Bailey Nurseries introduction. Tiger Eyes® is a beautiful golden-leafed form of Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac. New growth is a lively chartreuse green, quickly changing to yellow, both colors contrasting nicely with the rosy-pink leaf stems. The branches angle upward while the deeply cut leaflets drape downward, giving it a rather oriental look. As magnificent as the summer colors are, the dramatic effect of yellow, orange and intense scarlet in autumn are unparalleled.

The finely divided, green foliage turns a beautiful orange and scarlet-red in fall. It forms a wide spreading shape at maturity. This xeriscape sumac cultivar is a large, open, spreading shrub or small tree which typically grows 18 feet tall and 12-15' in width. Fruit clusters persist through the winter, providing some colorful interest and this fruit is attractive to wildlife. Cutleaf Staghorn has no serious insect or disease problems. Plant massed for stabilizing embankments or for hard-to-cover areas with poorer soils or for naturalizing in wild areas. Grows best in average, dry to medium moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.
