Barren Strawberry

The Barren Strawberry', also known as Waldsteinia ternata, is a wonderful ground cover that grows in full sun to part shade and prefers normal to sandy soils. It has dark, dense, evergreen, strawberry-like foliage that forms into nice mounds with a height of 4-6". 'Barren Strawberry' bears yellow flowers in spring and then shows warm, yellow colors in Autumn. 'Barren Strawberry' looks great with Veronica 'Royal Candles', Saliva 'Marcus' and grasses.

Weigela - Dark Horse
Weigela Dark Horse

The Dark Horse Weigela, Weigela florida 'Dark Horse' PP14381, is a new cultivar that is characterized by a superior compact habit, dark purple leaves, and pink flowers that contrast with the dark foliage. In combination, these traits set ‘Dark Horse’ apart from all other existing varieties of weigela. This is an ideal choice for late spring color in combination with conifers and broadleaf evergreens. Will attract hummingbirds! This old-fashioned, flowering deciduous shrub has very dark foliage and deep pink flowers that contrast well with the foliage. 'Dark Horse' makes a great landscape plant, and it retains its color interest throughout the season. It is quite attractive when grown as a hedge. 'Dark Horse' is easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer.

Weigela - Minuet
Weigela f. 'Minuet'

The Weigela 'Minuet', Weigela florida 'Minuet', is a hardy dwf variety that was developed in Canada and has green-tinged-purple leaves and produces a profusion of slightly fragrant flowers, a"minuet"in color. The corolla is ruby red, the petal lobes are lilac-purple, and the throat is yellow. The Minuet is hardier than other dwarf cultivars. It's compact, rounded shape is very attractive. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds.

Weigela - French Lace™
Weigela florida 'Brigela'

French Lace™ Weigela, weigela florida 'Brigela' is a new weigela that has abundant amounts of ruby-red flowers blooming in summer amongst the variegated yellow and green foliage. This weigela is a real stand-out in the garden, and has an awesome effect when planted in mass. It forms a rounded shrub that grows 4-5 feet tall and as wide. This large upright form makes an ideal high profile accent plant. It is equally suited for the background of perennial beds or to cloak unattractive fence lines. French Lace Weigela is also good as a shrub border, foundation or specimen plant. A deciduous shrub, it requires full sun. One should follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a formal appearance, shear annually after flowering.

Weigela - Carnaval
Weigela florida 'Courtalor'

Carnaval Weigela, weigela florida 'Courtalor', is a beautiful shrub that produces multitudes of pink flower buds that open into shades of red, white and pink trumpet-shaped flowers. The glossy deep green leaves are heavily textured. Carnaval is an extremely showy landscape plant with a growth that measures 4-5 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide. Slowly prune the down growing branches, and it will vigorously grow upright. Carnaval is a grower favorite because it is easy to plant, easy to maintain, and easy to enjoy! It likes sandy, well drained soil under almost any conditions. It can be planted as a specimen, hedge or in groupings planted 3 feet apart. It grows best in a sunny location with moist soil. This weigela tolerates some drought.

Weigela - Java Red
Weigela florida 'Java Red'

The Weigela 'Java Red', Weigela florida 'Java Red', is one of the oldest Weigelas. It is a dwarf, only rarely exceeding four feet of height, making it at its biggest half the size of the majority of Weigelas. Due to its compact habit it is one of the least prone to ranginess when left unpruned, though some degree of ranginess seems inescapable even with a compact dwarf.This compact, mounding shrub displays attractive red buds that open to deep pink blooms. The deep green foliage has an interesting purplish cast. This plant is useful as a background planting, summer screen or in shrub borders. This shrub is deciduous.

Weigela - Pink Delight
Weigela florida 'Pink Delight'

Pink Delight Weigela, weigela florida 'Pink Delight', is a compact rounded shrub with deep pink flowers in May and June. The blooms hold their color better than other weigela and this cultivar is hardier than other pink weigela. It grows 5-6 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Pink Delight is good as a shrub border, groupings, foundation or specimen plant. A deciduous shrub, it requires full sun to partial shade. Weigelas like plenty of sun, but manage in very light shade. They are not fussy about soil type, but they do best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. One should follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. It is pollution resistant.

Weigela - Polka
Weigela florida 'Polka'

Polka Weigela, weigela florida 'Polka', is a compact rounded shrub with thick, dark green leaves that contrast with the attractive, clear pink flowers with a yellow throat. Many think this is the best pink weigela! Large pink flowers cover this plant from June through September. It adds spectacular color to the landscape during the summer months. It requires full sun and prefers a well-drained soil. A very hardy moderate growing plant, this weigela grows 3-4 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide. Polka Weigela has an old fashioned look with its bright pink trumpet-shaped flowers and is a great choice for color in foundation planting and mixed borders. This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people. For a formal appearance, shear annually after flowering.

Weigela - Red Prince
Weigela florida 'Red Prince'

The Red Prince Weigela, Weigela florida Red Prince, is a deciduous shrub with dark red flowers. It is a full sized plant with good hardiness. The red flowers hold late into the season. It grows best in full sun to partial sun. Foliage is deep, purple-tinted green and forms a compact mound, reaching 6' when mature. Prefers well-drained soil. The cultivar 'Red Prince' is an egg-shaped, upright shrub with mid-green leaves to 4-1/2 inches long. Red, bell-shaped flowers bloom in early summer and again in late summer. Flowers attract hummingbirds. Suitable for shrub and mixed border.

Weigela - Rumba
Weigela florida 'Rumba'

Rumba Weigela, weigela florida 'Rumba', is a compact plant that is extremely showy with its bronze-purple tinged foliage and dark red flowers with yellow throat. It blooms from June through September and is an excellent border plant that will provide a season full of color. It grows 3 feet high and wide. The Rumba Weigela is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun. It needs full sun for best flowering, but will tolerate very light shade. Prune to shape after flowering. This semi-dwarf plant is very effective when massed or grouped in the shrub border, and also useful as a hedge or foundation plant.

Weigela - Tango
Weigela florida 'Tango'

Tango Weigela, weigela florida 'Tango', has both a compact, bushy habit and fantastic, purple foliage which makes this variety a must for a limited landscape. The flowers, a beautiful red with a yellow throat, bloom 3 to 4 weeks in June. Tango Weigela performs best in full sun. This moderate grower reaches 2-3 feet in height and width. This compact weigela fits nicely into mixed shrub borders and at the back of perennial plantings. It even works well as a low hedge. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear to shape in early spring.

Weigela - Variegated
Weigela florida 'Variegata'

The Variegated Wiegela, Weigela florida 'Variegata', has a compact habit, growing 4-6' high and wide. It has green leaves with yellow/cream fringes, and dark pink flowers. This deciduous shrub is grown for its showy bell-shaped flowers and spreading, arching growth habit. Leaves are dark green, oval and tapered, to 2.5 inches long. Dark pink flowers with pale pink-white interiors, to 1 1/4 inches long are produced in corymbs on short lateral twigs on previous years growth in late spring to early summer. Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds. Very nice in a mixed shrub border.

Weigela - Ghost™

'Nain Rouge' is nicely shaped, quite mounding, and cascading. It has rich green leaves in summer that turn red in the fall. It displays masses of spectacular orange red flowers in June and July. 'Nain Rouge' is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun. For best flowering, it needs full sun but will tolerate very light shade.

Weigela - Pink Poppet

The Pink Poppet Weigela, Weigela florida 'Pink Poppet', is the first in an upcoming line of weigelas with similar "ground-cover" habit. It has an almost prostrate form reaching only 2’ tall and spreading up to 40". This dwarf, dense, rounded, deciduous shrub produces funnel shaped shell-pink flowers that are born in profusion in June, and then with a lighter re-bloom again in late summer. 'Pink Poppet' has emerald green foliage all season long that contrasts nicely with the flowers. It is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Needs full sun for best flowering and foliage color, but will tolerate very light or sun dappled shade.

Weigela - Ruby Queen

The Weigela Ruby Queen, 'Weigela 'Ruby Queen', a Proven Winners selection, is a sister plant to Midnight Wine and Wine and Roses and is taller than Midnight wine and shorter that wine and Roses. The foliage has the same dark purple color as its sisters. Use Ruby Queen in mixed borders or as an accent plant near doors and walkways. Place them in borders for the dark purple accent color. The pink flowers are a nice contrast to the purple foliage. Place this plant in well drained soil.

The Weigela Wine and Roses, 'Weigela 'Wine and Roses', a Proven Winners selection, is a beautiful tall Weigelia with rich dark burgundy foliage. The dark burgundy foliage contrasts nicely with the pink flowers in the spring. This plant will produce a lot of flowers in the spring and will rebloom throughout the summer. Wine and Roses is very dramatic when planted in mass. This fast growing plant will add season long color to your garden.

Weigela - White Knight

Weigela - White Knight, Weigela florida 'White Knight' displays light pink buds in the spring that open to a pure white flowers over green foliage, and these gorgeous flowers continue to bloom all summer. The blooms occur singly or in clusters all along the branches of the previous year's growth. They frequently cover the entire shrub with funnel-shaped, pure white flowers in May-June There is a less showy repeat bloom usually occurring in late summer. Among weigelas, the flower of White Knight is unique because it is both fragrant and pure white. White Knight reaches 5' to 6' feet tall and is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun. For best flowering, it needs full sun but will tolerate very light shade. Prune to shape after flowering. When not in flower, this shrub tends to look rather ordinary.

Azalea - White Mollis Hybrid
White Mollis Hybrid Azalea

The Azalea, White Mollis Hybrid, Rhododendron x kosteranum, is a lush, deciduous shrub that bears a splendid supply of spectacular white funnel-shaped blooms in an unsurpassed brilliance in spring and early summer. White Mollis bears large clusters of 2 to 3 inch flowers and has been hybridized to be hardy even in more northern parts of the country. Flowers are borne in large, showy trusses in mid-spring just before the leaves emerge. The deciduous hybrid azalea is known for excellent fall color and unsurpassed spring flowers. If given too much shade or if plants are allowed to get too dry in midsummer, blooming will be reduced the following year. This azalea needs full sun. White Mollis also requires acidic soils and excellent drainage. This azalea is usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions.

Butterfly Bush - White Profusion, Buddleia davidii 'White Profusion', is a steady, reliable bloomer of pure white flowers that have a yellow eye. These tiny individual flowers are produced in profusion in long, dense trusses. It has soft silvery undersides on its leaves, which complement the white of the flowers. It is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun. This Butterfly Bush becomes weedy and sparse, with diminished flowering performance, if not grown in full sun; does poorly in wet conditions. White Profusion is a deciduous bush that blooms mid-summer until fall. White Profusion provides valuable summer and early fall flowers when few other shrubs are in bloom. Best grown in massed plantings in borders, cottage gardens, rose gardens or butterfly gardens. Plant it near a path or patio and the shrub will provide a delightful fragrance for you, too. It's generally pest-free. In cooler zones, White Profusion dies back to the ground each year, sending up a dense group of new shoots in late spring and quickly develops into a 6 to 8 foot shrub.

Rose of Sharon - Woodbridge

Rose of Sharon - Woodbridge, Hibiscus syriacus 'Woodbridge', is a very erect, upright deciduous shrub or tree. FIrst it is dark red, then it produces large rosy-pink flowers with a red center. This profuse blooming lasts from summer to fall. Woodbridge's trumpet-shaped blooms are four inches wide, it is a moderate grower, and also pollution-tolerant. Rose of Sharon prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is very tolerant of heat and drought. Keep it well watered during growth. Woodbridge does best in full sun, but light shade is acceptable, especially in far southern or southwestern climates. One's ability to shape Rose of Sharon also makes the shrub a prime candidate for hedges. It is a profuse bloomer and not only blooms late, but leafs out late as well.

Wormwood - Powis Castle
Wormwood Powis Castle

Powis Castle Wormwood, Artemisia 'Powis Castle', has a silvery, soft and lacy foliage that makes a good ground cover in mass plantings. It is a great selection for warmer climates since it tolerates heat and humidity very well. Powis Castle is easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer. Powis Castle is an excellent choice for rock garden plantings and containers. It will grow very quickly and allow a garden to fill in. The soft ferny leaves make an aromatic bouquet ideally suited for crafting fresh herbal wreaths or drying for potpourri. The blooms that it does make are suited for filling the outer edge of a wreath.
