Dogwood - Mahoning
Mahoning Dogwood
Dogwood - Mahoning, Cornus racemosa 'Mahzam', is a suckering shrub with a distinctly multi-stemmed habit with branching that is upright and erect. Its shape is an irregular, broad-spreading clump that grows 10' to 15' tall with an equal spread. It has small, creamy white flowers, held in 2" diameter clusters, that bloom early spring to mid-June. The flowers are not extremely showy, but numerous. This deciduous Mahoning Dogwood plant can become a bit leggy with age. In the summer the leaf color is a dull gray-green, but in the fall it develops a rich, reddish purple with full sun exposure. It is tolerant of sun or shade and can withstand dry or wet soils, therefore, Mahoning is very adaptable. Use as a border, hedge, difficult growing site, naturalistic area, soil stabilization, or for wildlife food and shelter.

Virginian Stock

The Virginia Stock, 'Malcolmia maritima', has dainty, sweetly fragrant flowers. Virginia Stocks produce a profusion of simple, 4-petaled flowers in a harmonized blend of pink, white, reddish, and lavender shades. It is perfect for scattering into paving crevices, nooks and crannies, in rock walls, for the front of the flower border, or to provide cover for the bulb foliage once bulb blooms are gone. It will bloom 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. The 3/4 inch wide flowers are produced in loose clusters. The Virginia Stock will perform in any soil, but does best in rich fertile soil. Plant it in full sun or light shade for best results. Virginia Stock is short-lived and will generally die out in the heat of the summer. Sow seed every 4 to 6 weeks for continual bloom, except for the very hot parts of summer. Especially enjoy the Virginia Stock when planted in large masses!

Masja makes a big impression while staying compact for the smallest of garden spaces. Masja is a tidy plant, only 36 inches tall and wide, and produces armfuls of ball-shaped, pink-toned blooms. This hydrangea is hardy, reliable and easy to grow. It prefers rich, loamy soil that is moist, but well-drained amd does well in full sun or part shade. Russian Cypress, Microbiota decussata, is an extremely hardy, low growing evergreen that resembles the horizontal type junipers, but has the bright green soft foliage like an arborvitae. The foliage develops a showy bronze color in the winter. It matures at about 1foot tall by 6 feet wide, although it can get taller and much wider. It has a radiating mat growth habit and a rather slow growth rate. Russian Cypress likes full sun to partial shade, and its best performance occurs in partial sun in moist, well-drained soils. It is very adaptable to poor, dry, thin soils in sun and wind exposed sites. It can be used as a woody groundcover for foundations, wall plantings where it can cascade, group or mass plantings, raised planters, and embankments.

Rhododendron - Mikkeli, Rhododendron 'Mikkeli', has lush foliage that provides an excellent backdrop for its clusters of beautiful pure white flowers, which have pink and green markings; blooms from late May to early June. Mikkeli is a dense, compact and well-branched variety. It prefers cooler regions and is hardy to at least -29 degrees F. Mikkeli is a late bloomer and grows 6 feet tall and wide. Rhododendrons are ornamental, acidic-soil loving broad-leaf evergreens. They grow best in partial shade. Plant in a location protected from strong winter winds. Mikkeli loves to be planted with pre-moistened peat moss, and well drained soil is a must! Use in mass, group or specimen for shrub borders, mixed borders, woodland gardens and shade gardens.

The White Mulberry tree, Morus Alba Tatarica, has many common names, such as, White mulberry, Russian mulberry, Silkworm mulberry, and Moral blanco. The White Mulberry is an excellent and handsome shade tree and is often planted on field edges in irrigated, semi-arid lands where it is also valued for fruit, poles and timber. This deciduous trees has a deep-rooting habit which makes it a suitable tree for linear plantings. It is a widely grown fruit which can be eaten fresh, preserved, vinified or, in some semi-arid areas, dried for winter use. Mulberries thrive in full sun and dislike crowded conditions; they prefer deep soils and need good drainage; they are frost resistant. Mulberries thrive over a very wide range of warm temperate, sub-tropical and tropical conditions.

The Red Mulberry tree, Morus Rubra, is a medium-sized tree, reaching approximately 50, and occasionally, 70 feet in height. The trunk can reach a diameter of up to two feet. The broad, rounded crown consists of many shorter branches, making red mulberry a desirable shade tree. It is a rapid-growing tree. The tree's value is derived from its abundant fruits, which are eaten by people, birds, and small mammals. Red mulberry is found on a variety of sites in the East and Central U.S. and is tolerant of shade. The fruit is an edible red-purple drupe that resembles blackberry. It has dark green leaves, and the fall color of the leaves is yellow.

Mount Baker Lilac, Syringa x hyacinthiflora 'Mount Baker', is a cross done by F. L. Skinnner, Dropmore, Manitoba. The cultivar is very hardy and blooms before French Hybrid Lilacs. It produces single white blossoms and looks great as a large shrub for background use. A profuse bloomer, it forms a shrub 8 feet high by 10 feet wide, and exhibits autumn coloring. This hybrid and its offspring show some disease resistance. Promptly deadhead spent blossoms to produce more robust blooms for the following year. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds and requires average water needs; water regularly; do not overwater. Mount Baker Lilac prefers full sun, good drainage and air circulation. It tolerates light shade, but best bloom is in full sun. It can be used in many situations, including shrub borders, informal hedges and perennial borders. Being very showy and fragrant, it makes a wonderful screen or border specimen.

As autumn approaches, it provides persistent glossy red hips that serve as food for wildlife, as well as providing lovely ornamentation to a planting. It is a very graceful, small, and tidy shrub, producing a tight thicket over time. Tolerant of light shade and challenging conditions, this is an adaptable and beautiful rose. Own root. Growth is generally best on moderately fertile, well-drained clay loam, sandy loam, or sandy soils. The fall foliage is often very colorful, in amber and ruddy hues.

The attractive gray-green foliage changes to a distinctive brick-red in the fall, showcasing its bountiful crop of luminous white berries. Creamy-white spring flowers have a lilac-like scent. Muskingum is a low-growing form of Gray Dogwood, 2 feet high with a 4 foot spread. It is a strong grower, very adaptable, and thrives in areas with harsh growing conditions. It shows great adaptability to many soil types from wet to dry, acid to alkaline, sandy to clay. Salt tolerant, insect and disease resistant.
