Honeysuckle - Serotina
Serotina Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle - Serotina, Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina', bears multitudes of spidery-looking, fuchsia-colored buds, which open into pink, sweet-smelling bugles that later fade to a creamy salmon color. It is an excellent grower, and its sumptuous flowers permeate the air with a delectable, intoxicating fragrance. You can prune this vigorous semideciduous vine to make it more shrublike, or let its bluish green foliage climb a trellis, pergola, arbor, or fence. Serotina was given an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in Great Britain in 1993. It grows easily in a wide variety of soil types and is not fussy about lime or acidic soils. Serotina prefers a moist, loamy soil, but will easily adapt to most situations; flowers best in full sun or partial shade. Hummingbirds love to sip on the small amounts of nectar at the base of the flowers, hence the name honeysuckle.

Akebia - Silver Bells
Silver Bells Akebia

Akebia - Silver Bells, Akebia quinata 'Silver Bells', is a vigorous vine with both light pink and reddish-purple flowers. It has the largest leaves of the five leafed akebia varieties. Silver Bells is a beautiful, fast growing vine that thrives with little care, and it produces a weird looking fruit! The abundant May flowers are very fragrant, and the vine occasionally produces a bizarre looking five inch long pink, or blue skinned fruit. Inside this fruit is a tasty roll of white seedy pulp that makes a tropical tasting clear jelly or flavorful drink. It is a beautiful evergreen in the Pacific Northwest and warmer areas, and deciduous in colder climates. Needs good garden soil and sun to part shade. To get pollination and fruit, plant two of the varieties. If provided with something to climb on, the twining vine can grow 20 feet a year. It may be pruned severely each year if you wish to control its rapid growth. It can also run along the ground, rooting where branches touch and become an attractive ground cover.

Silverlace Vine
Silverlace Vine

Silverlace Vine, Polygonum Auberti, is a fast growing deciduous to semi-evergreen vine. The silver lace vine climbs by twining its stems around a supporting structure. It produces dense foliage of heart-shaped, bright-green leaves, 1½ to 2 inches long. The clusters of tiny greenish white flowers are fragrant and bloom late, beginning in the sweltering days of late August and early September, a time when most plants are finished for the season. The vine is hardy and useful where a fast-growing screen is needed, on a trellis, lattice, or fence. Prefers well-drained, sandy soil but tolerates poor soil. Plant in full sun or shade. Don't plant it where it can intermingle with other plants - it will take them over. Less invasive in colder climates.

Clematis - Sweet Autumn
Sweet Autumn Clematis

Clematis - Sweet Autumn, Clematis maximowicziana, is a deciduous vine with a rampant growth habit and reaches 10' to 20' high. Its fragrant white flowers grow up to 0.5 inches across and continues to bloom late summer through fall. The white, citrus-scented flowers fade into feathery seed heads, and last until winter. Sweet Autumn prefers loamy, somewhat moist, well-drained soil. Provide a location where its head is in the sun and toes in the shade. Mulch around bottom to keep ground temperatures cool and moist. Give direct sun to encourage their large, showy blooms, but it will tolerate some shade. Sweet Autumn attaches to supports with twining leafstalks, and it will climb up trellises, walls, poles, trees and over shrubs.

Sweet Potato Vine - Chillin'™ Blackberry Heart
Sweet Potato Vine Chillin Blackberry Heart

Sweet Potato Vine Chillin' Blackberry Heart, Ipomoea batatas 'Chillin'™ Blackberry Heart' 'Seki Blakhrt' US PPAF, has deep purple/black heart shaped foliage. Chillin'™ Blackberry Heart works great in large containers and landscapes. This plant is quite vigorous and should only be paired in combination with other vigorous plants or the Ipomoea will take over the combination. Deadheading is not necessary. It is deer resistant and heat tolerant. Late in the season, tubular, fairly large flowers appear which are similar to morning glories. Usually they are not particularly noticeable, though, because the foliage claims most of the attention. Container plants and or rooted cuttings taken in late summer may be overwintered indoors in bright sunny locations. Potatoes formed by ornamental sweet potato vines are edible but are not as flavorful as those selected as a food crop. This plant can be a perennial in zones 9-11. In zones 3-8 it is an annual only.

Sweet Potato Vine - Chillin'™ Limeade
