Abelia - Golden Anniversary
Abelia Golden Anniversary

The Golden Anniversary™ Abelia 'Minipan', Abelia x grandiflora 'Minipan', features attractive bright green leaves variegated with creamy yellow to golden yellow margins. This is a dense, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub of the honeysuckle family. A Proven Winner Selection, Golden Anniversary is a compact sport of A. x grandiflora 'Compacta'. A colorful, easy growing new shrub with white flowers,'Minipan' also has attractive hints of pink and red coloration in its stems and foliage. It is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Golden Anniversary 'Minipan' does its best flowering in full sun. Being somewhat evergreen in the South, it is generally deciduous in the more northern areas where its stems may suffer substantial damage in cold winters. Use in containers or plant in mass on slopes or banks for attractive shrubby cover and erosion control.

Abelia - Mardi Gras
Abelia Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras Abelia, Abelia x. 'Mardi Gras', is a low growing, spreading, evergreen shrub with fragrant showy flowers. It is a dense, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub of the honeysuckle family. Displaying a green variegated foliage that is edged with creamy white margins, 'Mardi Gras' turns dark pink to red in fall. Since its small pink flowers bloom from May until frost, it becomes an excellent focal point in the landscape; provides year round interest and attracts butterflies. 'Mardi Gras' Abelia is easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer. This semi evergreen shrub is small in size: 3 feet is the average maximum. Use as a foundation plant or for mass planting; needs regular watering weekly, or more often in extreme heat. For a formal appearance, shear annually after flowering.

White Forsythia
Abeliophyllum distichum

White Forsythia, abeliophyllum distichum, is one of the earliest plants to bloom in spring with fragrant white, trumpet-shaped flowers. It is grown primarily for its very early, often profuse, spring bloom. This Forsythia forms a rounded shape with arching branches at maturity, and looks great planted in masses. The dark green summer foliage has a muted purple fall color. These late winter flowers can be showy despite their small size, since there are not yet leaves to hide them. The little blooms can occur in racemes of three to fifteen. You can bring some branches inside in February for earlier bloom. It has moderate growth rate to four or five feet high and wide. In the northwest it wants full sun, but can tolerate partial shade. Inland or further south it would want partial sun to partial shade. It's fairly low-maintenance just so long as it gets medium watering. It is not fussy about soil conditions but will not do well in a droughty spot. You can bring branches inside in February for earlier bloom.

Serviceberry - Regent Saskatoon
Amelanchier alnifolia 'Regent'

Regent Saskatoon Serviceberry, amelanchier alnifolia 'Regent', is a multi-stemmed shrub that displays multitudes of white flowers in spring and produces small black-purple fruits that are sweet; excellent for fresh eating or making jelly. Birds love them too. Since it flowers early in spring, this plant provides food for many pollinating insects. The gray-green foliage turns yellow to red in fall and is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Amelanchier 'Regent' grows into a small, mounded shrub 4 to 6-feet tall and wide. It is very winter hardy and has healthy foliage that is not bothered by insects or disease. It is drought tolerant but water regularly; do not overwater. Native Americans used Amelanchier fruit in making Pemmican, a staple of their diet.

Serviceberry - Shadblow
Amelanchier canadensis

Shadblow Serviceberry, amelanchier canadensis, is a large upright shrub that contains beautiful snowy white flowers in the spring before the foliage appears. The Shadblow produces sweet red-purple edible fruit that can be used in pies and jellies. This shrub spreads by sucker growth from the roots and the blue-green foliage turns yellow to red in the fall.

Serviceberry
Amelanchier canadensis

The Serviceberry tree, Amelanchier canadensis, may also be known as a Juneberry, Shadblow, or Shadbush. This large shrub has erect stems that form multi-stemmed clumps The serviceberries, genus Amelanchier, are deciduous shrubs or small trees that grow in the understory of temperate forests. This deciduous tree/shrub is multistemmed and gets up to 20 ft tall with a dense, bushy spread up to 10 ft across. The bush sends up numerous suckers and can become quite a thicket. Serviceberry trees have leaves that are 2 inches long and have a very pretty white fuzzy coat when young, but becoming shiny green as they mature. Ths fall color is brilliant yellow, red or orange. The flowers are white and borne in erect clusters in early spring as the leaves are unfolding. The berrylike fruits are showy and edible. The little serviceberry shrubs are useful in naturalized plantings, especially in open woodlands, under tall oaks or pines. Their beautiful, but brief, early spring flowering beats all but the earliest shrubs, and their fall foliage is first rate. It is an excellent small yard tree.

Serviceberry - Rainbow Pillar®

The mildew resistant summer foliage is dark green, changing to a brilliant orange-red in fall. It has small, oval or elliptical leaves, with finely toothed margins and downy undersides. Allegheny Serviceberry

The Allegheny Serviceberry, Amelanchier laevis, is perfect for naturalistic plantings. This small, multi-stemmed, upright tree blooms in early spring with petite, slightly fragrant, white flower clusters. The purplish-blue fruit is delicious in pies and jams and very attractive to birds. This serviceberry is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It is tolerant of a somewhat wide range of soils, but prefers moist, well-drained loams. Allegheny Serviceberry makes an attractive understory tree for lawns, shrub borders, woodland margins or native plant areas. European Serviceberry, amelanchier lamarckii, is considered a large shrub, or small tree, with white flowers produced in loose clusters of 6-10 in early spring, and then followed by sweet, juicy purple-black fruit in summer. The fruit is good for jams and jellies. The round, dark green foliage has yellow to carmine-red fall color. European Serviceberry is a medium to fast growing shrub that grows 10-15 feet in height as well as width. It attracts birds and butterflies, needs moist well drained soil, and full to part sun.

Autumn Brilliance™ Serviceberry
Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'

The Autumn Brilliance™ Serviceberry, Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance', is a rounded, graceful, smaller tree whose stems will be covered in white blossoms each spring and sweet purplish-black fruit each fall. Its spectacular show of white flowers in early spring is one of its main ornamental features. They begin to flower as a pale pink then fade to snowy white fragrant flowers. The petite blue-green foliage turns a brilliant reddish-orange in the autumn.</P><P>Autumn Brilliance is adaptable to a very wide range of soils and is also somewhat drought tolerant. Chokeberry - Red
Aronia arbutifolia

The Red Chockecherry, Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima', cultivar is a deciduous shrub which typically grows slowly to 6-8' tall and is perhaps most noted for its attractive glossy red berries and red fall foliage color. Clusters of white to pinkish flowers appear in spring. Flowers are followed by abundant glossy red fruits which appear in dense clusters along the branches. Fruits ripen in late summer and persist throughout fall and well into winter. The glossy, dark green turns bright red in autumn. 'Brilliantissima' primarily differs from the species by being more compact, producing more lustrous foliage with superior red fall color and producing larger, glossier and more abundant fruit. Common name is in reference to the tart and bitter berries. which are so astringent they cause choking in those who try to eat them. The ability to withstand wet conditions makes it suitable for growing on the margins of ponds or streams. Also effective in naturalized areas where its suckering, colonial growth habit does not need to be restrained. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It has a wide range of soil tolerance including boggy soils. Best fruit production usually occurs in full sun.

Chokeberry - Black
Aronia melanocarpa

The Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa 'black', is an open, upright, spreading, somewhat rounded but leggy, deciduous shrub which typically grows 3-6’ tall. It displays clusters of 5-petaled, white flowers in spring which are followed in early autumn by blackish purple, blueberry-sized fruits which usually do not persist into winter. Lustrous, dark green foliage turns an attractive purplish red in autumn. Although technically edible, the fruits are extremely tart and bitter, and are not recommended for eating off the bush. Attractive fall color and fruit give this shrub good ornamental value for a shrub border. Its ability to withstand wet conditions makes it suitable for growing along ponds, streams or water gardens. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of wide range of soils. Best fruit production occurs in full sun. Spreads by root suckers to form colonies.

Chokeberry - Autumn Magic Black

Autumn Magic Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa 'Autumn Magic', has fragrant white flowers in May, followed by large, edible, dark purple-black berries, that persist throughout the season. The berries are commonly used to make juice. The glossy dark green foliage has incredible red and purple fall colors. It can grow to six feet height and width. Since it grows rapidly, you do not have to wait long for it to become an impressive large shrub within a year. This vase shaped shrub does fine in wet or dry soil, in sun or partial shade, even in poor soils. This plant makes an excellent specimen shrub, border shrub, or even use for erosion control. May be pruned to desired size, and can be used for a natural windbreak or snow fence. Makes a nice tall hedge when spaced at 5 feet.

The Azalea Golden Lights, Azalea 'Golden Lights', has rich and fragrant golden-yellow flowers with showy bronze-red fall foliage that is simply gorgeous! It is one of the renowned Northern Lights series of very cold-hardy Azaleas bred in Minnesota. It was designed in order to bring this glorious warm-climate shrub all the way through zone 4. The flowers open from bright golden buds into orange blooms, each about an inch wide and held in huge clusters. It blooms a bit later in spring than most Azaleas, extending the Azalea show by a week or so. This hard to find shade of golden-orange Azalea is a very lovely big, well-proportioned shrub; grows 6 feet high and 5 feet wide. Plant in acid soil in filtered sunlight or light shade, although plants tolerate full sun in cool-summer areas. The orchid-colored flowers are 1 1/2 inches across, and they bloom in mid-May. The flower shape of Orchid Lights is unusual; it is intermediate between the flower shapes of two parents. Azalea Weston's Innocence

The Azalea Weston's Innocence, Azalea 'Weston's Innocence', is a vigorous growing, wide plant, with upright branches. It is rather compact and becomes mound-shaped with age. A heavy flowering cultivar, it has strongly scented small white flowers that boom in late June. Azalea Weston's Innocence has foliage that is twisted, slightly glossy, and has a bronze cast in summer; turns burgundy-red fall. It performs consistently well in zones 5 and 6. Plant in acid soil in filtered sunlight or light shade, although plants tolerate full sun in cool-summer areas. Use soil rich in organic matter, which retains water and drains quickly. Never prune after mid-summer because those branches produce the next season's flowers.
